Battle of Midway

  • It was a second major naval battle in the Pacific
  • Japan launched a two pronged attack
  • U.S. Experts had broken the Japanese fleet code so the United States had advance warning of the Japanese strategy
  • This was significant to the axis powers because the military initiative was still in the hands of the Japanese. Their carrier striking force was still the strongest
  • It was significant to the allied powers because the U.S. Sank Japanese aircraft carriers and shot down many enemy planes

Stalingrad

  • Soviet forces surrounded the German soldiers
  • German troops were fighting for control of the city
  • As the Germans advanced they captured many industrial centers
  • This was significant to the allied powers because the victory broke the momentum of the axis advance
  • This was a significance to the axis powers because they lost about 200,000 casualties and Hitler forbid the German soldiers to surrender

Bataan Death March

  • The rapid pace of the evacuation prevented the U.S. Forces from stockpiling enough supplies... Particularly food
  • Japanese soldiers forced more than 70,000 survivors to march through the jungle on their way to prison camps
  • The Japanese treated the U.S. And Filipinos soldiers brutually
  • It was signicant to the allied powers because a lot of soldiers were in prision camps and being injured and killed
  • It was a significance to the axis powers because they captured the capital of the Philippines and the American and Filipino defenders of Luzon

Okinawa

  • 700 Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Beachheads and naval task force
  • It was called the bloodiest of the Pacific war
  • Three hundred and fifty of the planes were a suicide plan
  • The Japanese fought to the death
  • This was a significance to the allied powers because Germany's surrender had allowed the allied forces to concentrate their efforts on the war in the Pacific
  • This was significant to the axis power because Japan had lost more than 77,000 soldiers and it was a heavy loss for the Japanese army

The Invasion of Italy

  • The Italian king ordered Mussolinis arrest and named a new prime minister
  • The Italian government signed an armistice with the allies
  • Germans took Mussolini and set up a base for him in northern Italy
  • This was an significance to the allied powers because they marched into Rome and cause it to be the first axis capital to fall
  • The was a significance to the axis power because they had their first capital fall and they got Mussolini

Battle of the Atlantic

  • German Uboats continued to take a staggering toll on the allied ships, lives and supplies
  • Air Force planes flew at night dropping their bombs in the general area of a given target
  • U.S. Aircrafts concentrated on bombing in daylight
  • Bombers had dropped hundreds of thousands explosives on German factories, supply lines and military centers
  • This was significant to the allied powers because they developed fast escort ships and won this battle
  • This was significant to the axis powers because their Uboats took a big toll on the allies
