Steering Committees Last updated: 1/07/2020

Big change is possible when we form coalitions, alliances and partnerships across hubs. Our Steering Committees exist for one reason: to ensure Global Shapers are directly involved in designing, implementing and monitoring our 2021 Areas of Impact. By mobilizing best practices and identifying solutions to be scaled worldwide, Steering Committee members drive local and global action on climate change, equity and inclusion, and education and employment.

Mission and Mandate

Steering Committees are tasked to work with Global Shapers HQ and the Advisory Council to mobilize hubs for action in three priority areas and create synergies with World Economic Forum initiatives to amplify our impact globally. Overall, their responsibilities include:

  • Build the capacity, knowledge and expertise of Shapers to create change
  • Develop strategic learning content on relevant global issues and solutions
  • Share best practices and foster collaboration in TopLink working groups
  • Support hubs to design, executive and report on hub projects in TopLink
  • Track progress on the goals and targets outlined in our 2021 Areas of Impact
  • Ensure young people's voices are heard wherever the impact area agenda is shaped
  • Mobilize pledges, campaigns and other initiatives to inspire collective action
  • Self-organize for impact, including: co-create governance structures and minimum expectations for members and release quarterly reports on the community's progress.

Impact Areas

Young people today are the first generation living with the significant effects of climate change and are possibly the last generation that can reverse course. At both the individual and hub level, Shapers are passionate about the environment and the urgent need to preserve our planet. With the right tools, training and political will, Shapers carry out sustainability projects to create a future where we can all thrive.

Our goal is to mobilise 1 million people to influence policy and drive action to safeguard our planet.

Access to quality learning and dignified work remains an upmost priority for young people, as evidenced by the most recent Shapers Survey. Understandably, education and work vary from region to region and access is often delineated against factors including gender, race, income and class. To help drive truly equitable societies, Shapers advance digital literacy for all and help impart market-ready proficiencies.

Our goal is to equip 100,000 people with formative digital literacy and market-ready skills for employment.

Young people today view diversity, equity and inclusion as crucial to improving the state of the world. Our differences enable us to effectively innovate as hubs and build strong leaders advancing human rights and equal opportunity for all. Shapers envision a world where young people drive community engagement, policymaking and systems change, and inspire collective action for a more equitable future.

Our goal is to equip 100,000 people with the knowledge and skills to drive action on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Steering Committee members selected?

The selection of committee members takes place every two years. Both Shapers and Alumni are encouraged to apply. The last call for applications took place in December 2018 and the selection process involved the Global Shapers Impact Council and Global Shapers HQ. All members must be approved by the Head of the Global Shapers Community.

Can membership on the Steering Committee be terminated?

Yes. The Head of the Global Shapers Community reserves the right to terminate a Shaper’s membership on a Steering Committee at any time if a breach is made to our charter, values or code of conduct. All Shapers are invited to provide feedback (positive and negative) about Steering Committee members to the Head of the Global Shapers Community.
