Entering the theatre, I was excited and curious. I had no background information on the plot, actors, or characters. I sat close to the stage in the center, so I felt very connected to the performance. The semi-circle shape of the Constans theatre makes it easier for the audience members to feel connected to the performance.
When the lights dimmed and the theatre silenced, my excitement increased. The auditorium was medium sized. It was not too small, yet not large enough to lose its intimacy. As I sat in the dark theatre, I slowly began to forget about my other obligations and worries. I felt relaxed and isolated from the outside world. Location contributes to one’s fulfilment of the Good Life. Occasionally isolating yourself from distractions is an important part to remaining relaxed and happy. In this case, the theatre created a quiet, enclosed, and comfortable place to escape campus and enjoy the show.
I attended this performance with my roommate Madison. I got ready for this performance by reserving my spot online, and getting there thirty minutes in advance. A large amount of people waited outside the auditorium for the doors to open, and it made me even more excited. Attending the performance with friends enhanced my experience in that we were able to experience it together and discuss our reactions and opinions. In the pursuit of the Good Life, the opportunity to share experiences with others allows us to feel more complete and wholesome. Collaborating with peers allows us to have a better learning experience. We are able to expand on our thought processes and are introduced to new ideas.
This play takes place in the early 1900s. The clothing and set made it clear that the time period was very different from the one we live in today. The central issues of this story are material greed and child labor. Religion played a large role in this play. Being raised a Catholic, I understood some of what it means to follow the rules of one’s church, but not to the extent that they are followed in the play. In the play, the archbishop told Sarah she could not perform her play. Her play had exhibited adultery, and this went against the rules of the church. After watching the play, I realized the extent to which the importance of religion has changed. Today, while I may not follow every rule within the Catholic church, I still consider myself a good Christian.
The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt provide us an opportunity for katharsis by reminding us of what is truly important in life. This play highlights the societal changes that have occurred over the last one-hundred years. By showcasing the changes that have occurred in order to protect human rights, and remembering the changes that still have to be made, we are offered an opportunity for katharsis.
