HPS Austin Highlights february 2020 Edition

HPS Austin Celebrates Black History Month

Throughout Black History Month in February, Harmony Public Schools Austin honors the exceptional achievements and incredible sacrifices of those who came before us in the fight for equality for all. See all the different ways the district honored African-American art, culture, and history.

The student-led Afro-American Society of Harmony Science Academy - Pflugerville hosted the 3rd annual 2020 Black History Month Program celebrating African-American inventors and innovators. Students showcased prominent black figures and performed traditional and modern African dances, songs, and hosted a fashion show. Students also hosted guest speaker, Mr. Kevin Millender, a Samsung Senior Instrumentation Technician.

Harmony School of Science hosted Bramaya, a West African dance and drum ensemble, during their annual Black History Month program. Kindergarten through 5th-grade students enjoyed the traditional African rhythms combined with new musical ideas of drum and dance. After a lively performance, students learned all about the musical instruments and their origins.
Harmony School of Endeavor held a parade that featured students in traditional cultural wear through the school. During the Black History Month Program, guest speakers spoke to students about the struggles they overcame as young black adults looking to reach higher education and about being the power to be who they are. Each encouraged students to believe in themselves and to chase after their dreams and goals in life.
Harmony School of Innovation had many special guest readers stop into the classroom this February! Parent and WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) volunteer, Mr. Richard Dozier, Computer Engineer from Centene Corporation, Kelvin J. Gibson, and Chelly Bell, Director of Corporate Relations for Upbring, a non-profit organization, read books to inspire students. HSI also hosted the Huston Tillotson Alphas Delta Phi Alpha Fraternity Chapter step team who performed for kindergarten through 2nd-grade students.
The Harmony School of Excellence music department held a Black History Program named The Afro Latino Connection. "The program was designed to inform students how all African and Latino Americans are connected. We are connected through Africa and the Diasporas in several countries throughout Latin American and Mexico." Guest speaker, Favi Parrilla, Parent Educator at Any Baby Can, spoke to inspire students.

STEM For All

Nearly 3,000 greater Austin area students from 3rd through 12th grade came together for the love of all things STEM between February 19th through the 22nd for the 2020 Austin Energy Regional Science Fair. Harmony Austin students competed and brought back many medals with five projects advancing to the Texas Science & Engineering Fair. HPS Austin Celebrates National Children's Dental Health Month

February kicked off National Children's Dental Health Month, which highlighted the importance of oral health in children. During this month, our dental community partners visited with our young Harmony Austin students to begin a strong foundation of healthy oral habits.

February is National Children's Dental Health Month, and Harmony School of Science celebrated in partnership with the St. David's Foundation Dental Program. All elementary students received free goodie bags filled with dental floss, a toothbrush, and toothpaste this February.

The partnership has not only provided HSS students with the tools and knowledge to keep their teeth healthy but has also given them free dental care with just a few steps away from their classroom. The St. David's Foundation mobile dental van was on-site at HSS and has welcomed many students who were ready for their close-up. HPS Austin thanks the foundation for their support in keeping students cavity-free. We are excited to announce that our partnership will continue with the St. David's Foundation Dental Program this upcoming school year with Harmony School of Innovation and Harmony School of Endeavor.

The Austin Community College Department of Dental Hygiene students visited 1st graders at Harmony School of Innovation in February to teach them about the importance of oral health.

1st-grade students learned about the lasting effects that processed sugar can have on teeth, how to properly brush and floss their teeth daily, and about which foods are healthy and unhealthy to their teeth. The ACC Dental Hygiene students will return at the end of March for their third and final visit of the school year to show 1st graders the tools used at a dental office visit.

HPS Austin Celebrates Student Success

Harmony Science Academy - Pflugerville high school students competed in the Texas Art Education Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) this February and brought home 18 medals. Take a look at some of the art pieces entered into the competition.

Out of 17 school districts, 32 schools, 78 teachers, and 1826 entries, only 129 pieces advanced to the next level of competition. We are proud to announce that 2 of those pieces were works by HSAPf 12th graders, Shaiza G., and Emely M. This is Shaiza's second year to receive the honor of advancing to the state competition. We wish them both good luck in April as they travel to San Marcos, Texas, for the 2020 High School VASE State competition.

“The competition was fierce this year but we have some amazingly talented students!” said Andrea Rogers, AP Art Teacher.
"Window to the Soul" by Emely M.
"Follow the Fireflies" by Shaiza G.

Civic Engagement

Fueled by their belief in civic duty and power of a well-written piece of legislation, 11th and 12th grade Mock Government students from Harmony Science Academy-Pflugerville and Harmony School of Excellence led round-table discussions about gun reform policy with seven Texas State Capitol staffers.

The club hopes to use these interactions to create a more concise policy that can affect real-life change within the Texas Legislature. For them, Mock Government is more than a club; it is a chance to envision the State and to create a brighter future for all.

Community Connections

For the last seven years, Dove Springs Proud, an Austin community group of committed Dove Springs alumni and residents, have celebrated individuals and organizations who, through their unwavering dedication, have helped to improve the community of Dove Springs. This February, the Dove Springs Proud 8th Annual Award Ceremony celebrated Victoria Mancha, HPS Austin District Public Relations Director. President and Founder of Dove Springs Proud, Ricardo Zavala, presented the award to Victoria for her proven history of going above and beyond when working for DPS to serve the youth and residents of Dove Springs.
