2018 Coker/FMU Fall Invitational Preview

Coker Cobras

The Coker College women's volleyball team begins their season with a pair of double headers on back-to-back days when they host the Coker/FMU Fall Invitational on August 24th and 25th. The Cobras will play at 1 pm and 7 pm in the DeLoach Center on both days. Tickets for the matches are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to all Coker faculty, staff and students.

The Cobras finished with a 14-17 record last season. Their 14 wins were the most for the program since 2007-2008, and they advanced to the quaterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference tournament for the first time in team history.

The Cobras enter the 2018-19 season with five experienced seniors in Cayley Gunter, Arianne Jewell, Chloe Attram, Olivia Veith, and Kara Overholt.

Junior setter/right-side hitter Taylor Du Bray returns as well. Du Bray was an Honorable Mention to the South Atlantic Conference All- Conference team last season, and has been selected to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team this year. Her 383.5 points were the fifth most in the South Atlantic Conference last season; she ranks second in the conference amongst players returning for the 2018-19 season.

In addition to the talented returners, Coach Rowland has landed a superb class of recruits who should figure prominently into the rotation this season, including Rami Mullen, Gabrielle Milo, Emily Everton, Lana Strejcek, and Olivia Cerick .

The Lees-McRae Bobcats finished 7-18 last season, including 4-10 in Conference Carolinas action. They opened the season with eight straight losses before rebounding to finish 7-10 for the remainder of their schedule.

The Bobcats were picked to finish ninth overall in Conference Carolinas in the recently released preseason coaches poll. Longtime setter Courtney Weathersbee graduated last season, finishing her career ranked sixth on the Bobcats all-time assists list. The team will look to junior transfer Megan Gallion (Feather River Community College), and freshman Erica Slinde to try to replace her presence on the floor.

Smirne enjoyed a standout freshman season last year for the Bobcats. She finished second on the team in kills, and was tabbed as a "player to watch" by Conference Carolinas coaches entering the 2018 season. Smirne dominated in the Bobcats 3-2 loss to Erskine last season, notching 21 kills and 10 digs.

UNC Pembroke vs. Coker

Saturday, August 25th | 7:00 PM | DeLoach Center

The UNC Pembroke Braves finished 7-26 last season, including 0-12 in the Peach Belt Conference. The seven victories more than doubled their win total from the prior season when they won just three matches. The Braves lost both matches against the Cobras last year, dropping six out of seven sets.

However, the Braves brought in seven new recruits this season, including a set of 5-11 twin sisters, and two 6-1 freshmen. Aquia Jones, Amber Tyndall, and Bailee Jones figure to provide the young team with senior leadership at key positions.

Player to Watch

Jones has been a steady presence for the Braves since her freshman season. She finished second in assists during her freshman season, and then led the team in both sophomore and junior seasons. She'll enter her senior season with more weapons around her than she's had at any point in her career. Jones recorded her best performance against St. Andrews last season when she notched 27 assists in the Braves' upset victory over the Knights.
