COLLEGE AND CAREER DAY AT PS 24

The Chaplain Charles J. Watters School 24 held its 3rd and final College and Career Day of the 2015-2016 school year on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. The focus of this town hall styled event was political science. Thank you Senator Sandra B. Cunningham, Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, Freeholder William O’Dea, Former Jersey City Mayor Gerald McCann, and Community Aide and Activist Samantha Moore for sharing your innovative careers with our students!

THE WALKING CLASSROOM

The fourth grade class at PS 33 has been using The Walking Classroom, a national award-winning education program that provides students with an innovative way to get exercise without sacrificing instructional time. The program includes 30 MP3 players with preloaded, common-core aligned lessons. First, students are given a content related lesson by the classroom teacher. The class then takes a brisk 20-minute walk, while listening to a kid-friendly podcast lesson. Each podcast begins with a brief health literacy message before giving the students an auditory lesson that supports classroom instruction.

PS 33 STUDENTS READ OVER 40,000 BOOKS!

Dr. Paul….#33 has become a myON Spotlight School for reading over 40,000 books on the online, digital library. MyON recognized the impressive results in student engagement and the high level of use of the online reading program. As of April 27, 2016 their 423 students have read over 44,000 books and logged over 6000 hours this school year. Principal Frank Piccillo has used the program to nurture a love of reading. “It’s a simple fact,” he said, “the more kids read, the better readers they become!” The District has used MyOn for the last two years to help increase reading in the district. The program offers a wide array of books appealing to many interests on many reading levels so students can find books of interest to them of the appropriate reading difficulty. It also includes books in Spanish.
