4 common mistakes parents make when raising a bilingual child/4 errores comunes que cometen los padres al criar a un niño bilingüe

It can be hard to raise kids bilingually and there are some common mistakes that are to be avoided if you want your child to be confident in the language. Here are four mistakes that need to be avoided:/Puede ser difícil criar a los niños bilingües y hay algunos errores comunes que deben evitarse si desea que su hijo tenga confianza en el idioma. Aquí hay cuatro errores que deben evitarse:

1. Make fun of them: Your child will come up with the cutest little mistakes and at times, it will be very hard not to laugh at them. However, children are very sensitive and the last thing you want is to discourage them. Children need to be reassured and praised rather then laughed at./Reírse de ellos: su hijo cometerá los errores más simpáticos y, a veces, será muy difícil no reírse de los mismos. Sin embargo, los niños son muy sensibles y lo último que quiere es desanimarlos. Los niños necesitan ser tranquilizados y elogiados en lugar de reírse de ellos.
2. Correct them: While it is important for children to be corrected, you need to be careful not to crash their confidence. Children that are corrected too much in their second language will be reluctant to speak out of fear they will say something wrong. One way to correct your child can be to just rephrase nicely what they said so that they hear the correct way and don’t forget to praise them as much as possible!/Corregirlos: Es importante que los niños sean corregidos pero debe tener cuidado de no dañar su confianza. Los niños a los que se corrige demasiado en su segundo idioma serán reacios a hablar por temor a decir algo incorrecto. Una forma de corregir a su hijo puede ser simplemente reformular amablemente lo que dijo para que lo escuche de la manera correcta y no se olvide de elogiarlo tanto como sea posible.
3. Test them: Learning a language should be fun. It shouldn’t be something they need to be tested on. If they feel they are assessed/judged they will no longer want to engage in the language./Examinarlos o evaluarlos: aprender un idioma debería ser divertido. No debería ser algo en lo que deban ser examinados. Si sienten que han sido evaluados o juzgados, ya no querrán participar en el aprendizaje del idioma.
4. Be inflexible: You need to be consistent of course but be flexible. Speaking a second language shouldn’t be a burden for your child. Try to make it as natural and fun as possible or it will become a struggle for everyone in the family, especially when your child gets older./Ser inflexible: debe ser coherente, por supuesto, pero flexible. Hablar un segundo idioma no debería ser una carga para su hijo. Trate de hacerlo lo más natural y divertido posible o se convertirá en una lucha para todos en la familia, especialmente cuando su hijo crezca.

People often think that children will pick up languages if they’re simply exposed to them. However research shows that it takes consistency, commitment, and creative reinforcements, inside and outside the home, for children to learn and maintain a second language. / La gente suele pensar que los niños aprenderán idiomas por simplemente estar expuestos a ellos. Sin embargo, las investigaciones muestran que se necesita consistencia, compromiso y refuerzos creativos, dentro y fuera del hogar, para que los niños aprendan y mantengan un segundo idioma.

Access to a larger world: When you learn a language you also learn the culture. Being able to speak two languages means you are able to speak to people in a different cultural and linguistic context. Bilinguals can use the right language with the social codes that go with the language. In other words you are able to step into another culture. Rudolf Steiner a famous pedagogue says: “Each language says the world in its own way”. / Acceso a un mundo más amplio: cuando aprendes un idioma, también aprendes la cultura. Poder hablar dos idiomas significa que puedes hablar con personas en un contexto cultural y lingüístico diferente. Los bilingües pueden usar el idioma correcto con los códigos sociales que acompañan cada idioma. En otras palabras, pueden entrar en otra cultura. Rudolf Steiner, un pedagogo famoso, dice: “Cada idioma habla al mundo a su manera”.

Intellectual Gymnastic: Learning another language stretches your mind intellectually. When you learn another language you have to focus on the structure of sentences, you have to recognise sound patterns and make inferences. Research even shows that learning a language would help delay Alzheimer disease / Gimnasia intelectual: aprender otro idioma expande tu mente intelectualmente. Cuando aprendes otro idioma tienes que centrarte en la estructura de las oraciones, tienes que reconocer patrones de sonido y hacer inferencias. La investigación incluso muestra que aprender un idioma ayudaría a retrasar la enfermedad de Alzheimer.
