It All Began in a Garden - The Shire A visit to Hobbiton, just South of Auckland NZ

As soon as we made our decision to visit New Zealand I set about finding where the set used as Hobbiton in the Lord of the Rings series was located. Lucky for me it was not far from Auckland so it became the first destination on our visit. It was a good distance to practice driving on the wrong side of the road before we headed out on our 6 week driving tour. At least that's what I told Rob, and he must have agreed because the day after landing on the island we headed out in search of The Shire.

Although we did not meet any Hobbits they must be prolific gardeners because the place was blooming lovely.

Hobbits not only grow gardens full of beautiful blooms but their vegetable gardens are wonderful too.

Every Hobbit home was wonderfully unique.

This may well have been the home of Samwise Gamgee.

I fully expected a Hobbit to emerge and invite me in for tea.To which I would gladly have replied - "Yes, please!"

If you look hard you might see Bilbo preparing for his party.

After a couple of hours exploring Hobbiton we headed to the Green Dragon Inn for a Gingerbeer to refresh ourselves before tackling the drive back to Auckland and reality.
