MAPS Newsletter December 13th 2019

Well done to the Choir who 'stole the show' at the recent DRET Carol Concert held at St Matthews. It was lovely to see so many parents there as well.

It is remarkable to hear the progression the choir has made over the last few years. Incredibly precise and tuneful singing is now the norm.

Well done to our Year 3 readers as well (Milo and Iga) who did the school proud.

Singing should be (and really is) great fun and it is good for the soul!

Parental survey results: Thank you to all of you who did our parental survey. We had a really healthy response rate. In terms of issues you wanted addressing car parking and traffic were the big ones that came out. While we have some control over this area there are elements that we can not control, but it is on my next Campus meeting with the senior school, so we will try. The other issue was over communication, aimed more at communication with teachers than with the school directly. If you do want to speak to your child's teacher please do contact them, and they will arrange a time that you can speak. Other findings were....

  • Are your children happy here? 113 said Yes 1 said No
  • Are they making good progress? 112 said Yes, 3 said No
  • Are they well looked after? 114 said Yes, 1 said No
  • Are they well taught? 113 said Yes, 1 said No
  • Would they recommend the school to others? 110 said Yes, 4 said no = about 97%

Car parking and traffic. As the nights draw in and it gets darker it is even more critical that we are safety conscious in the car park. Please do not stop in the hashed zone, and please do not double park. We just need to be considerate to others and be safe at all times. The last thing we want is for there to be an accident. Please be patient and safe, and allow plenty of time to get to and from school, as the roads are not good.

Reception - taking their first steps towards Broadway!

Reminder about birthday cakes. Without wanting to sound like Scrooge, we cant accept birthday cakes on site due to allergy concerns over a number of pupils. If you do want to celebrate your child's birthday with their class the best and easiest way to do so is with a series of small packets of sweets (Haribo type or similar) that have the ingredients clearly on them. Thank you.

Christmas Run: Friday 20th December. The last morning of term sees our Christmas run in aid of charity. We have asked for sponsorship forms to be sent in already. If you have been unable to get a sponsorship form sorted then we ask that you contribute £2 on the gates on the day towards the fundraising. We will have lists of all those who have got sponsorship, and handed it in. Thank you.

Years 1 and 2 in rehearsal for their super play.
Well done to Year 3 who have been making maths games for their home learning with some impressive results

Reminder: there are no clubs next week - so pick up is 3.30 every day except Friday 20th when it is 1.30pm

Book donations

We would like to set up two book boxes, one for Reception and Key Stage One and one for Key Stage Two. These would work through donations of books your child has finished with from home which would then be made available for others to take home and read. They can then be kept for as long as the child would like but the hope is that new books will be donated to keep the flow going. With Christmas fast approaching, if you are having a tidy out and have good condition books that you would be happy to donate, please bring them in to the school office to be added to the baskets.

Reverse Advent Calendar

To encourage acts of generosity and caring for others, we have mentioned to the children the idea of a reverse advent calendar. This is where a family or a work place starts advent with an empty box and then every day they put something in the box. At the end of advent (Christmas) these donations are given to a charity. We have decided to join in with this idea for the last week of term. In the entrance hall you will find a box and we would encourage you to make a donation if you would like to. At the end of the week, all donations will be taken to the food bank.

Suggested items - any food items with a long shelf life, tins, packets, biscuits etc We hope you will involve your children in this act of generosity to encourage them to experience the joy of giving as well as receiving at this special time of year.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Senior Choir next term: We are really excited about our Senior Choir next term. We have managed to get the services of Justin Miller (Choirmaster at St Matthew's) who is going to run the choir on Fridays 3.30-4.30pm. Mrs Pheasant has done a fantastic job but her considerable talents are now being used in other areas. We all look forward to hearing the Choir on its new journey.

Well done to all our pianists who took part in our recital this week. It was lovely to hear the progress they are making, and in particular it was great to hear the duets that were played - a super example of the teamwork needed in music. This is just one aspect that makes music so worthwhile.

Christmas Cake Sales - Tuesday 17th

The Friends Of MAPS will be holding two Christmas Cake Sales in the Hall, one after each of the Carol Services on Tuesday the 17th. Timings for each sale are:

  • 2:30pm - KS1 families
  • 3:30pm - KS2 families

Please donate homemade and/or shop-bought bakes'n'cakes at the following times:

  • Monday the 16th from 8:20am and from 3:20pm
  • Tuesday the 17th from 8:20am

Friends and Elves Of MAPS will have a "drop-off" point at the Main Entrance, where they will eagerly collect your yummy donations. They even promise not to scoff the lot before the sales. Honest. If you are planning to bake your own this weekend, please include full written details of ingredients. to help avoid allergic reactions. Funds raised will go towards our major new target for 2020. More details on that will follow next week.

Well done to our community litter picking heroes. Another great attendance from MAPS & Malcolm Arnold Academy last Sunday. It was very cold & everyone deserved their hot chocolates afterwards. Do get involved in the next one if you can.
