Abstract

Gaming has become the Great American Pass Time! Gaming has changed society members’ interaction with each other. Gaming is exciting, educational and entertaining. Gaming is means of communication that extends across nations, countries, and the entire world. However, gaming could not and would not be successful without a Gaming Developer. This paper will discuss the educational requirements to become a Gaming Developer as well as the impact of gaming in general on society.

Gaming has become the Great American Pass Time! Gaming has changed society members’ interaction with each other. Gaming is exciting, educational and entertaining. Gaming is means of communication that extends across nations, countries, and the entire world. However, gaming could not and would not be successful without a Gaming Developer. This paper will discuss the educational requirements to become a Gaming Developer as well as the impact of gaming in general on society. There is a lot you have to do to become a gaming developer. Game development can be hard but it will get easier as you keep doing it. It is best to start easy and then do more and more to improve on techniques and skills of gaming development. A career in Gaming can start in high school, one could also take classes outside of high school, and/or online classes. To become a Gaming developer you will need to develop high math skills, obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, and create a portfolio. To become a Gaming developer you will need to apply multiple mathematical applications because there is a lot of coding in gaming development. Coding is the creation of a mathematical equation that directs the computer to perform in certain ways to make the game work properly and correctly. Gaming programmers use several levels of mathematics in order to be successful in the gaming developer career. It is recommended that incoming people trying to get a Degree in video game programming complete academic coursework in trigonometry, physics, and calculus. In addition, it is also important for game programmers to learn linear algebra and basic algorithms. If you are lacking in some of these courses you should take them early in your college years. Being highly skilled in mathematics is only the beginning phrase to becoming a Gaming developer, the first step. In order to build your career, you also need a Bachelor's Degree. Many Gaming developers have a general background in computer science or they have completed an education program to become a game designer. Computer programmers most often have bachelor's degrees for gaming development. Another useful degree would be that of a Computer Engineer. The education requires to become a programmer of video game include a list of classes such as C++, calculus, object-oriented design, game algorithms, computer graphics, and network fundamentals. Degrees in computer game programming can be earned on campus or in an online course. In some cases a Bachelor Degree does not get you the career in the game development being sought. Therefore, the most effective way to get noticed by gaming studios would be to create some games and put all of them in a portfolio. In order for a portfolio to serve it purpose, it should include several small fun games that can be played to completion, that perform properly and effectively for the user. A backup to the portfolio, if needed would be screenshots or little videos of crucial game scenes so the games can be efficiently evaluated. In the event that the support software products required are not readily available at the time of the portfolio review, the screenshots would promote the dynamics of the game. The portfolio as well as the screenshots should have source code for all the games. Additional, notes should give credit to any collaborators who have helped with create the game's design, programming and/or presentation. As stated earlier, there are several steps that must be accomplished to become a gaming developer. A Gaming Developer must have certain characteristics which go beyond education and academics. A Gaming Developer must have the ability to see what society wants and needs before developing a game. A Gaming Developer must use studies which incorporates Cause and Effect. A Gaming Developer is responsible for developing games that have Core Functionality, Reliability, Usability, Design and Experimentation. Since Gaming has become the Great American Pass Time, the Gaming Developer holds within their hands the ability impact society. The developer sets the standards which impacts the gamer in several ways. Game developers establish an arena which provides the user with opportunities for success or failure, skill building and critical thinking. In addition, there is also the promoting of team interaction, following rules and regulation as well as working within time frames. The ultimate role of a Gaming Developer is to illicit interest; to create excitement and adventure; to use sight, sound, movement and motion to promote the interest of the targeted audience. A Gaming Developer in some way promotes a societal need for competition, for challenges, a need amongst people to resolve dilemmas, create solutions, solve mysteries, defeat the enemy and form alliances.

Senior Project Self-Reflection

My overall self-reflection about my Senior Project is one of excitement and enlightenment. The process for me was a great eye opener to a career field I had only thought about. The actual accomplishment of completing research and developing a game makes me want to get more involved with this type of engineering and or gaming. The writing of the paper was not the most exciting assignment but the research which supported the writing helped to develop an understanding of the dynamics of the game I developed. My thoughts at this point is that I understand the concepts behind developing. I am able to apply the basic steps need to develop a game. In addition, I might continue to delve more into gaming in the near future as I continue to learn and grow along my career journey.

Product/Community Service Reflection

In looking back on the actual development of a gaming product, I am again excited. I actually developed a game that works. A game that uses coding and has rules. This product is purely my design based upon my ideas and creative thoughts. I believe this product reflects the beginning of what could lead to prosperous career path. I am no longer preoccupied by thoughts of the possibilities of developing a game. I am now attentive to the process of developing a game and looking forward to learning and applying the knowledge gained. Gaming developing provided a lesson for me that goes beyond the classroom.
