Karen's Challenges

This is a lovely photo of me and my dad. I found it when I was clearing my dad's garage recently and I know it meant a lot to him as he would spend most of his quality time in there.

My world changed forever on 19 Feb 2015 when my lovely and brave Dad passed away from a brain tumour that had been diagnosed 4 weeks earlier. He was initially given 3 months to live but the cancer spread quickly and he never stood a chance. He was 63 and was so looking forward to retiring.

I can't even imagine the mental anguish my dad had to go through in those final 4 weeks, He was so brave.

It was only after Dad died that I read that someone is diagnosed with a brain tumour in England every 2 hours and less than 20% of brain tumour patients survive beyond 5 years of their diagnosis.

I am currently battling depression as I approach the second year of his passing. I hope that setting myself some challenges for 2017 will not only help me with my recovery but will also allow me to do something positive by raising money so that one day we can find a cure for this terrible disease.

So what are my challenges? Here is a taster of things to come:

I am shaving my hair to raise the profile of Brain Tumour Research on Saturday 18 February. I will be donating my hair to the Little Princess Trust that provides real hair wigs free of charge to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Join me in wearing a hat on the 31 March to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. East Northamptonshire Council will be participating so please bring your hat and a £1 donation.

Ffrancon and Cai will be doing a Superhero fun run in Milton Keynes on 1 May.

I'm going to take on the longest zip wire in Europe in North Wales (with the support of some lovely if not bonkers friends). Date to be confirmed. I am very scared on heights!!

August - I will attempt to swim 250 lengths of the local swimming pool without stopping!

I hope to raise money by hosting a quiz in a local pub.

Ffrancon and I will undertake the Royal Parks half marathon on Sunday 8 October.

And there's more to come!!
