ROMUALD WICZA - POKOJSKI playwright||director||manager

Director, playwright, manager since 2011 general and artistic director of the Miniatura City Theatre. Graduate of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw. In 1991, he founded his own Teatr Wiczy, which has shown more than 20 performances, both on the theatre stage and in open-air settings. Since 1994 to 1997 worked at the Instytut Teatru Narodowego (National Theatre Institute) and in Teatr Narodowy (National Theatre), where he co-created first ‘impressarial’ theatre stage in Poland, Teatr Mały. Since 2015-2016 he taught students at the University of Gdańsk. Since 2006 to 2009 he taught students at the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń. Actively engaged in cultural and theatrical activities, concept-maker and director of the Międzynarodowy Festiwal Bulwar Sztuki (International Art Boulevard Festival, 2003–2006), manager of the social community centre Centrum Wolnego Czasu Wicza (2004–2009). Realized many artistic and social projects addressing homeless people, socially handicapped groups, immigrants etc. From 2008 to 2011 worked as a programme director of Biuro Gdańsk 2016, co-author of cultural strategy ‘Wolność kultury. Kultura Wolności’ (Freedom of Culture. Culture of Freedom) for Gdańsk running for the European Capital of Culture title.

As a director and playwright collaborated with following theatres: Teatr im. Heleny Modrzejewskiej in Legnica, Baj Pomorski in Toruń, Olsztyński Teatr Lalek in Olsztyn, Teatr Wybrzeże in Gdańsk. His productions were presented in, among others, Armenia, CzechRepublic, Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Iran, Ireland, Germany, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, USA, Great Britain, Italy, Belorussia and Japan. Won numerous individual and group awards, including award for innovative puppetry work for ‘Dietrich. Broken nails’ performance shown during World Festival of Puppet Arts in Prague in 2009. In 2017 he received an official The Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis and in 2007 he received an honorary badge ‘For the Merits for Polish Culture’.
