NWPL PRIDE CUP ROUND | VALLEY POOL | 25 FEBRUARY, 2017 |

In a thrilling, three-match water polo spectacle, Round Seven of the National Water Polo League lived up to the hype and expectation. For the first time, Brisbane hosted the NWPL Pride Cup Round where home team, Brisbane Barracudas, would take on the Queensland Breakers for the Pride Cup and Local Derby Trophies. Two All-Stars teams from Australia's three LGBTI-inclusive clubs, Melbourne Storm, Sydney Stingers and Brisbane Tritons would compete for the inaugural Pride Shield.

The women's teams kicked off the evening in what was to be a high tempo, competitive contest between the two evenly matched teams. Ashleigh Southern opened the scoring for the Barracudas and stormed to an early lead in the first half. However, the Breakers staged a late come back with Bridget Leeson-Smith and Laura Vicente Zuniga closing the gap but the Barracudas managed to hang onto their lead and take the win, 6-4. PRIDE ALL-STARS vs EQUALITY ALL-STARS

Two All-Stars teams from Australia's LGBTI-inclusive teams, the Melbourne Surge, the Sydney Stingers and the Brisbane Tritons along with representatives from the Barracudas and Breakers, competed for the inaugural Pride Shield. The match was played during the National League and was broadcast live via Water Polo Australia's Facebook page.

The Equality All-Stars take the early lead in the inaugural Pride Shield match.
The Pride All-Stars set up the counter attack and go onto score the goal.
Many of the players have only been playing Water Polo for less than one year. The quality of play during the Pride Shield match was incredibly high and competitive.
Congratulations to the Equality All-Stars who won the inaugural Pride Shield, 8-4.

In the final match of the evening, the men's team, would compete for the Pride Cup. The Barracudas were aiming for the clean sweep against their local rivals as a close first Battle of Brisbane match.

Patrick Flanagan gets the opening goal for the Breakers but the Barracudas were quick to respond with two goals from Callum Smith.
The Barracudas continued to with their strong attacks and in the second quarter were able to extend their lead, 8-4, going into the second half.
A heavy defence by the Barracudas helped the home team stretch their advantage to six goals going into the final quarter.
The Barracudas continued to work the Breakers defence and earned a crucial exclusion and as the final whistle blew the home team won 14-6, keeping them in NWPL Finals contention.
