For Pete's Sake®Cancer Respite Foundation Your impact on families facing cancer in our 2015-2016 Fiscal year

A Message from our Founder

What a tremendous year we had together as the For Pete’s Sake Community. We helped hundreds take a break from cancer to refresh, reconnect and rejuvenate – spending time with loved ones to laugh together, hold hands, ride rollercoasters, embrace stillness, meditate, contemplate and LOVE!

We talked to close to six hundred families who inquired throughout the year, offering emotional support for those in crisis. We provided respite vacations, staycations, patient and family lunches and receptions, literature for coping, caring and grieving, and most importantly, an attentive, compassionate ear to all those who reached out for help during the cancer crisis!

TAKE A MINUTE TO REVIEW OUR OUTCOMES RELATED TO THE PROGRAM – the pictures alone ARE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS! YOUR GENEROSITY HAS SHAPED THE LIVES OF SO MANY PEOPLE COPING WITH CANCER. THANK YOU FOR EMBRACING OUR MISSION AND THE HUNDREDS OF SPECIAL PEOPLE WE SERVE EACH YEAR!

With gratitude,

Marci Schankweiler, FPS Founder and CEO Marci@takeabreakfromcancer.org

For Pete's Sake enables cancer patients and their loved ones to strengthen, deepen and unify their relationships by creating unforgettable and lasting respite vacations.
We partnered with our donors to provide complimentary sporting event tickets, monthly lunch gatherings, our annual Traveler Reception and FPS event invitations to our families. Additionally, our Staff and Volunteers take the role we play in the cancer journey seriously, always reaching out to FPS families with a friendly phone call or a hopeful email. We strive to make connections with each of our families multiple times throughout the year. In the event that a patient's health declines, we respond with ancillary support in the form of staycations, books, bereavement resources and referrals to other nonprofits that might be able to help. FPS families are never alone.
Our monthly Lunch Bunches are special times for our staff and Travelers! We take a break at our office to enjoy lunch, conversation and laughs with FPS Travelers and their families. Dozens of patients, caregivers and kids attend each Lunch Bunch! This special time connects our community in a very meaningful way.
Here are some FPS Travelers at the Philadelphia Phillies FPS Community Night! An anonymous donor purchased tickets for this event so our families could enjoy a mini break from cancer with each other and the FPS community. We love hosting fun outings like this throughout the year to continue the idea of "taking a break"!
Our Traveler Reception, hosted each December in donated space by ASTM International, is the BEST party of the year! Hundreds of patients, caregivers, kids, volunteers, staff and home donors attend this celebration. It's a time of reflection, support and peace as we gear up for the Holiday Season. At the 2015 reception, Doug and Kandece Henning surprised their sons with the news that they were taking a break from their dad's cancer in Florida at the FPS Respite Vacation Home.
Michelle Rose, 49 years old with pancreatic cancer. Michelle traveled to Universal Studios Orlando Resort in Florida with her three children.
We ask our nominators to complete pre and post respite evaluations that measure the patient, caregiver and children's ability to cope with cancer. 100% of nominators who return their evaluations note improvement post respite. We have 10 years of proven impact, as referenced by the slides below!
You helped give Julie and her parents a break from cancer in Cancun! Thank you to our Travel Partner, Apple Vacations, for donating this trip and for being a loyal supporter of our mission!
We remember with love those that have left us physically, but live forever in our hearts. Pictured is Ivan Jones. Before passing away in June 2016, Ivan, who battled brain cancer, traveled with his girlfriend, Brandy, to our respite vacation home in Florida.
"I feel so happy, healthy, alive, joyful, thankful, and so relaxed. I really believe this trip will give me more time to be in remission!” - Susan Stumpf, 51 years old with ovarian cancer. Susan traveled with her caregiver to the FPS Respite Vacation Home in Davenport, Florida.

The Fiscal Year 2016 was an exciting one for FPS. Some highlights for which we can all be proud:

- For the first time ever, our revenue grew to over $2,000,000, with $740,000 allocated to our Endowment.

- Our Healing, Hope and Happiness Endowment has grown to over $1,000,000 and income from this fund will directly benefit our patient program.

- Included in our revenue is well over $450,000 of in-kind support in the form of complimentary office space, patient accommodations, professional and marketing services, respite supplies and special event goods and services. These non-cash contributions are critical to the organization’s success and allow us to best use our constituents' dollars.

- HUNDREDS OF ATTENDEES joined us AT OUR FOUR INTERNAL SPECIAL EVENTS, WHICH COLLECTIVELY RAISED $388,000.

- we had TREMENDOUS GROWTH FROM SUPPORTERS INCLUDING PATIENTS, OUR YOUNG FRIENDS COMMITTEE and our new york chapter members WHO HOST COMMUNITY EVENTS ON OUR BEHALF.

- Our net assets grew to over $1,800,000, including capital assets of our two respite vacation homes in Florida and our endowment fund.

THANK YOU TO THE PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS, PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, CORPORATIONS AND COMMUNITY WHO MAKE FOR PETE’S SAKE A REALITY FOR HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES!

Sustaining monthly income is vital to our mission. We set a goal to increase our Monthly Donors and we are proud of the results!

We know we make a difference! The name of the campaign - Healing, Hope and Happiness - was created with our travelers in mind. Healing for the patient, Hope for the caregiver and Happiness for the child of a cancer patient. We are pleased to announce that we met our fundraising goal for year 1, and look forward to completing the 3 million dollar campaign by 2019!

In October 2015, we officially launched our Healing, Hope and Happiness Endowment Campaign. Prior to this, the campaign was in a silent phase, as we garnered support from key founding donors. We launched the campaign at a dinner attended by some of our most loyal and long-standing supporters.

The dinner event was chaired by Walter Buckley, Chairman & CEO of Actua, Inc, William Avery, Retired CEO of Crown, Cork and Seal and Pete Musser, President and CEO of the Musser Group and raised over two hundred thousand dollars. Guest speaker, Dr Pallav Mehta, Co-Author of ”After Cancer Care” and Director of Integrative Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center discussed the importance of emotional health throughout a cancer journey which reinforced the impact of an FPS respite vacation even more!

our events give us a chance to take a break with our supporters while raising funds for future families to take a break from cancer!
