AH’– WAH–NEE (Southern Paiute for ‘Balance’) Exhibition

With participating artists: Loretta Burden, Fawn Douglas, Noelle Garcia, Jean LaMarr, Melissa Melero Moose, Cara Romero, Rose B. Simpson, Shelby Westika, Roxanne Swentzell and Natani Notah.

Curator and exhibiting artist Fawn Douglas is an Indigenous American artist and enrolled member of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. She also has roots in the Moapa Paiute, Southern Cheyenne, Creek and Pawnee tribes. She is dedicated to the intersections of art, activism, community, education, culture, identity, place and sovereignty. Within her art-making and activism, she tells stories in order to remember the past and also to ensure that the stories of Indigenous peoples are heard in the present. Her studio practice includes painting, weaving, sculpture, performance, activist art and humor. She is currently working on her Master of Fine Arts, Art in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and recently co-founded the Nuwu Art + Activism Studios in downtown Las Vegas.

Fawn is a dedicated advocate for environmental conservation, including the designation of Nevada’s Gold Butte as a historic national monument and her participation in the #NoDAPL protests at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. Notable actions also include (but are not limited to) the fight for tribal and rural communities to retain their water rights, Red Rock anti-desecration efforts, and protection of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge.

As a survivor of sexual assault, Fawn's experience has given her the fire to speak up about women's rights, and she has been a vocal advocate for #MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women). She continues to speak up for her sisters and is an active supporter of Our Bodies, Our Lands - the movement that recognizes the connection between protecting land, water and Indigenous people.

There will be one lecture and two panel discussions tied to this exhibition as follows:

Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art

Seeing/Seen

Curated by Erica Vital-Lazare. Presented by the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art and the Womxn of Color Arts Festival

Working with a range of professional photographic portraits, found images, archived studio and performance photos, video, and slides, curator Erica Vital-Lazare invites us to share the company of Black women, exploring the contemporary and historical presences of individuals who have made themselves known in community activism, politics, medicine, entertainment, and the service industry. The exhibition will include photography by veteran Newsweek photojournalist Lester Sloan, as well as works by local photographers Althea Nelson and Jeff Scheid and a new painting by Q’Shaundra James honoring three enslaved women whose bodies were used in 19th-century gynecological research. Grounding her presentation on the backdrop of an Africanist color palette, Vital-Lazare has shaped Black Women: Seeing/Seen to reflect “the ways in which the lives of Black women can differ in kind and at the same time reflect a potency born of a shared history, majesty and hard-earned shaping of future selves.”

Human Resource Exploitation: A Family Album

In 1980, when Elena Brokaw was one year old, the Guatemalan government assassinated her father. In Human Resource Exploitation: A Family Album, she uses the photographs and ephemera she inherited from him to illuminate the context of his death. Enlarged to a confronting scale, the photographs have been altered by Brokaw to include text from a torture manual published by the CIA, the organization that backed and trained the Guatemalan forces that carried out the murder. By juxtaposing the evasive euphemisms of the text with the direct warmth of the photographs, she evokes the clash between violent historical events and the reality of everyday people whose lives are changed by forces beyond their control. Brokaw is a Creative Writing MFA candidate in Literary Nonfiction at UNLV.

FELIX GONZALEZ-TORRES’ “UNTITLED” (L.A.) IN LAS VEGAS

Never before exhibited in Nevada, “Untitled” (L.A.) is one of the artist’s famous “candy-spill” artworks. Here, Gonzalez-Torres finds beauty in the everyday by transforming green, cellophane-wrapped candies into an arrangement of color, form, and texture. Viewers are encouraged to take and eat the candy, creating a moment of engagement that is sensory and personal.

I Am Here

Taking its cues from a text-based artwork by the visual storyteller Ashley Hairston Doughty, I Am / I Am Not invites us to think about what it means to use art as a vehicle for personal narratives. What stories do artists choose to tell about themselves, and who is invited to talk? I Am Here will feature works on loan from Carla Jay Harris and Heidi Rider, as well as new additions to the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art collection by Catherine Angel, Tomoko Daido, Claudia DeMonte, Krystal Ramirez, and others. The exhibition will include a special section for artworks by artists who tell us about their presence in Southern Nevada: I AM HERE.

Hostile Terrain 94

Since 1994 the United States Border Patrol has pursued an immigration strategy that funnels undocumented migrants into the “hostile terrain” of the Sonoran Desert between Arizona and Mexico. Hostile Terrain is a gallery-sized installation that uses video, augmented reality, and more than three thousand toe tags to create a somber visual memorial to the individuals who have died during border crossings as a result of this approach to immigration. Created by Jason De León, an anthropologist and the founder of the research-education-art collective Undocumented Migration Project, the installation revolves around the participation of volunteers who fill out the toe tags, hand-lettering the names and statistics of the deceased before pinning the tags to a vast map of the landscape around the border. The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art and the UNLV Anthropology Department joins dozens of institutions around the world in turning De León’s vision into an international monument.

UNLV Student Union Gallery

Back at It!

The Student Union Art Gallery presents “Back at It!,” a variety of works reflective of the up-and- coming artists from here at UNLV. The pandemic upended the classroom learning experience for a bit, but it didn’t upend the creative process. It remains alive and keen to carry on. “Back at It!” features the artwork of UNLV students Iulia Filipov-Serediuc, Emily Fischer, Sam Ganados, Kaitlyn Hinojosa, Sasha Mosquera, Keren Sagastume, Soda Souza, and Nanako Wagley.

Bryan and Jessie Metcalf Art Gallery

Reprise

The Bryan and Jessie Metcalf Art Gallery in the Richard Tam Alumni Center presents “Reprise” an exhibition of work by recently graduated Bachelor of Fine Arts students. The pandemic quarantine transformed the educational standard from in-person to virtual, and denied us the opportunity of a one-on-one art experience. The work of these artists here presented in person explores themes of pop culture, the family narrative, and social taboos. “Reprise” features the artwork of Julia Anthony, Marissa Gibson and Dan Hernandez from the BFA class of 2020.

Judy Bayley Theatre Lobby

It may be super-realistic, somewhat abstract, romantic, representational or other-worldly. Thanks to Joseph Raffael, Wulf Barsch, Chad Brown, Ray Jacobsen and John Hogan for sharing their talent. All the works are from the Donna Beam Gallery Collection.
