Braking in the Snow zoey's tips and tricks from Salvador Insurance

Our office mascot, Zoey shares some tips about breaking on the ice. First, you need to know if you have ABS or anti-lock brakes system, because this will determine how you should break on ice.

Zoey Salvador's Tips & Tricks

Should I pump my brakes if I have ABS? No.

You do not have to pump your brakes with ABS, it is done for you automatically. There are speed sensors mounted on your wheels that monitors your speed while you're braking. If skidding starts to occur the system will pulsate your brakes automatically to help put you to a stop.

How do I know if I have ABS?

When you turn your key before your vehicle is powered on, you will see indicator lights. This indicator will be yellow and will have either “ABS” or “anti-lock.”

Tricks for Winter Weather Driving:

  • Know the weather forecast before traveling and give yourself enough time. There may be road crews at work or an alternate route may need to be taken.
  • Slow down and reduce your speed. You will want to brake earlier and keep more space between yourself and the vehicles ahead of you.
  • Keep a watchful eye when driving through an intersection. There is a chance that other vehicles may slide out into the intersection.
  • The two tire tracks made by other vehicles on the road are typically the most icy. Stay calm and keep the steering wheel in the direction you want to travel if you lose traction.
