"Making a difference to those who need it most" - Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett

Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett

Biography

Orange Sky Laundry was founded by two Australian men Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi. Lucas is 22 years old and Nicholas is 21 years old. They both grew up in Queensland. The two boys first met at their high school in Brisbane called St Joseph’s College. In year 12 they were both house captions together and they became best mates. They are both very chilled out and laid-back type of people. Both Lucas and Nic had quite a privileged upbringing. During high school they started to volunteer with food vans and it was then that they started to appreciate how fortunate they were. These experiences they had with the homeless people showed them that all human beings are the same just some circumstances in life can lead to differences. They both wanted to continue to help others in their community. A couple of years after they had finished school Nicholas left his job as a camera man and Lucas took a break from university. The two of them decided to take action on their idea of Orange Sky Laundry. The name came from one of their favourite songs ‘Orange Sky’ by Alexi Murdoch because the message of the song is about helping others. Lucas and Nicholas are full time volunteers along with 500 others. The charity runs completely on sponsors and donations.

Orange Sky Laundry Charity is a free transportable laundry service or the homeless. It began washing and drying clothes for homeless people in 2014. Each van is fitted with two washing machines, two dryers, built-in generators and its own water supply. Currently there are 11 services running across Australia. Every week Orange Sky washes and dries over 6.9 tonnes of laundry and has over 1,300 hours of encouraging and genuine conversations.

In 2016 they were award Australian’s of the Year.

What is Orange Sky?

Orange Sky Laundry was made for homeless people to get their clothes washed and dried for no charge. While the homeless people wait for their clothes to be washed they sit on chairs around the van and have conversations with the volunteers and other homeless people. When they make connections with others it makes them feel accepted as a person and brings value back into their lives. Orange Sky spreads hope to homeless people and it gives them a chance to feel fresher and reclaim their dignity. It gives them opportunities they probably wouldn’t have had. Orange Sky Laundry brings people together and gives the homeless people a chance to have a simple conversation with someone that makes them not feel so lonely which improves their lives.

The simple actions that Orange Sky do every day make a real difference to homeless people’s lives. An example of this is shown in an interview with a homeless man talking about when people see you day after day wearing dirty clothes they develop a certain impression of you. Whereas if you have fresher clean clothes they develop a different impression of you and that effects the way you are treated.

“Nicholas and Lucas have found a way to treat others the way they want to be treated by restoring respect, raising health standards, and be a catalyst for conversation." (Orange Sky Laundry, 2017)

Prophets

What is a prophet?

A prophet is an individual who has been called by God to deliver his message. The role of being a prophet means you believe and preach the word of God. Prophets had to show people the way and spread the word of God to everyone no matter the consequence. Prophets preach the word of God in three main ways, through their actions, through their visions and mostly through talking to people.

What qualities are associated with a prophetical person?

Prophetical people are not only just people that spread the word of God but they do have many qualities that a prophet has. They have courage to speak out for what they believe in even if it means they have to risk their lives. The qualities associated with prophetical people are compassion, equality in the world, making a difference, having a voice for justice and helping others in need, all in the name of God. All prophets biblical or modern day all challenge us to live better lives in the word of God.

Explain why your chosen individual is like a prophet?

Nicholas and Lucas are modern day prophets who live their lives in accordance with God’s call. Nicholas and Lucas live as modern day prophets because they give homeless people the belief that they have the ability to start a fresh and move on from the past. This is showing the face of god because in the bible Jesus washes the feet of strangers and outcasts to cleanse them to show that he values them. Jesus doesn’t care where they have come from or what they have done he believes everyone deserves a new beginning. Lucas and Nicholas give the homeless people a chance to have their clothes washed and feel clean and in doing so improves their dignity. Lucas and Nicholas also bring value back into homeless people’s lives through having conversations. This helps them become less lonely and feel accepted as a person.

Motto

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

I think this scripture piece is a suitable motto for Nicholas and Lucas as it represents their values and reflects the work that they do.

Ezekiel

Love is one of the vital messages that the prophets shared. The Old Testament prophets lived out God’s call through their words and actions to Israel to return to their covenant relationship.

Ezekiel is an Old Testament Prophet. He was the priest of ancient Israel who wrote a part of the Old Testament. Ezekiel was called by God to deliver his message. At the start of the 6th century Ezekiel’s ministry was conducted in Jerusalem and Babylon. “He was among those deported in 597 to Babylonia. Ezekiel's religious call came in July 592. He subsequently prophesied until 585 and then was not heard of again until 572. His latest utterance can be dated at about 570.” (Biography, 2014)

Orange Sky Laundry can be compared to the prophet Ezekiel in the way that he delivered the mess that it doesn’t matter what you have done in the past in the eyes of God but how you are living your life now. Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi offer hope to raise up the spirits of people who may have lost hope due to something that may have happened in their past.

Ezekiel also gave hope to those Israelites who were in exile. This provides a model for Nicholas and Lucas as they also give hope to people who have lost their homes who are exiles from society.

Scriptures from Ezekiel

But if the wicked turn away from all their sins that they have committed and keep all my statutes and do what is lawful and right, they shall surely live; they shall not die. None of the transgressions that they have committed shall be remembered against them; for the righteousness that they have done they shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that they should turn from their ways and live? (Ezekiel 18:21–23)

Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord God. Turn, then, and live. (Ezekiel 18:30–32)

The word of the Lord came to me: What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, “The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”? As I live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. (Ezekiel 18:1–4)

No matter how bad you think you are, and no matter how bad you think your life is Ezekiel 18 offers you a powerful message of hope.

It is possible for you to break the family chains that hold you back. It is possible for you to leave your past behind and it is possible to start a new and better life.
