ERIN- STUDIO ART

Blog 1: Drawing Unit

We developed the skill of conturing, starting with the shading worksheet. The techniques we developed from the sheet we transferred to our hand drawings. Using the 6b pencil, we were able to draw our hands more accurately and smoothly. Also we created original art, when we were able to draw whatever we wanted as the background of the hands interacting. And finally, we collaborated and reflected on our artwork and next time I need to not smudge as much on some of my drawings.

We developed skills with painting only the negative space and making our paintings stand out more. Not only did we develop skills with negative space, but we also expanded our global awareness of pottery. By making our pinch pots out of clay, using sgraffito, and glazing our pots, we created beautiful pieces of art. We created original art when we altered paper and charcoal still life in our own way to use different values for self portraits. After collaborating and reflecting on our art, I feel as though I could’ve done better in my shading in the self portrait.

I tried something new for the Notan when I created a butterfly. It was a challenge and pushed my artistic ability to my limits. Also I was influenced by exploring the art of water color and learning the techniques through a practice sheet. After completing the practice sheet, I was able to use the techniques I gained from the practice and put it on a canvas. I created a watercolor of fall and all the different colored leaves.

I was able to spread global awareness by researching and exploring a new artist. By researching Eduard Manet, I was able to share my facts and information with the entire class. I was able to develop a new type of painting in the impressionist style of my artist. I took a risk by painting a complex painting titled “Roses in a Champagne Glass” and I recreated it to the best of my ability. Not only did I take risks, but I was able to communicate with other students in the class to improve my work. Also I observed the works of art in class and learned new techniques. The painting I recreated was in some ways my own original art, when I took my own unique approach when interpreting it.

To begin, I learned all the techniques of block printing before attempting to make my own. I created original art when I designed my own block prints, which consisted of: a Christmas tree, star, and rain drops. I developed skills by using the gouger to carve out each print, and I got better and better at using this tool as I made more block prints. Also I was able to solve the problem of using too much ink at one point, and using the brayer tool correctly. By observing other peoples prints, I was able to learn better techniques of print making and improve my work as a whole.

This month I was able to develop a new skill of one point perspective with a tutorial on google slides. Similarly, with two point perspective I learned from instructions on google slides. However, before completing these lessons, as a class, we observed how to draw the horizon line. Also as a class we spread global awareness by collaborating and learning about the vanishing point. I was able to draw orthogonal lines on my perspectives, and I solved the problem by erasing those lines. After reflecting and learning all the techniques in order to be successful, I created original art when i made my own two point perspective of a kitchen.

I developed a skill of calligraphy and wrote with a pen handle and a pen nib (C4) a quote from the movie “Annie” using India ink. Then I created original art when I made my own background for the quote. Also I learned how to make embroidery. Using the hoop, embroidery floss, a needle, and muslin cloth, I first created the 7 basic stitches of embroidery. Then after collaborating with others, I found the idea of making embroidery of a cloud and rain.

Since last post of creating original art with the incorporation of colored pencils with circular designs, I think this qualifies as a personal mandala. It qualifies as a personal mandala because it is meant to have symbolic importance through “a drawing, or other graphical mark”, and creating our own design around a hand illustrates true symbolism. Next we were introduced to the art of paper mache, and we developed the skill through the creation of masks. My paper mache project was more symbolic than personal, because it represented the true expression of a mime. Not only is the creation of masks possible with the skill of paper mache, but you could observe other ideas to paper mache. Ideas such as bowls, or even ornaments, could possibly be made out of this technique. I strongly enjoyed being able to collaborate and come up with our own ideas for the mask creation. However, next time I would hope to make my mask a little thicker in newspaper, so it comes out less flimsy.

Blog 9 and 10 (reflection)

After a year long of creating original art and using many artistic behaviors, I was able to understand art a million times better. I always believed art was simply creating pieces for your own benefit, but in reality art is for the benefit of others. I feel as though I did have the opportunity to demonstrate the Artistic Behaviors through my work all year, and allowing others to view and observe my work. The unit that was most successful and my favorite was definitely one of the first ones, where we looked at our hand and drew it.

In difference, I was able to grow and develop the most from the painting unit, where we replicated a painting from an artist. I drew a vase full of flowers, and feel as though that skill will carry on with me. Also an aspect of the class that I would like to change, would most likely be the unit about the stamp making. I would maybe make it so that we could make larger stamps, and maybe less of them. Only because creating five pieces of art with the stamps was a difficult process, at least I struggled anyway.

An aspect of the class I would most definitely keep, would have to be the unit about one and two point perspectives. Those two perspectives could be very helpful in the real world, when it comes to engineering or architecture, and maybe even interior design. The piece of artwork that I am most proud of would have to be the calligraphy writing of my quote “You’re never fully dressed without a smile” because I feel as though that quote really represents me. I have a personal connection to it because I’m usually always smiling no matter what! After taking this course, my feedback would be to allow yourself to make mistakes, and creating more and more art with new techniques will overall all make you a better artist. Thanks for a great year!

In the final weeks of studio art, we were able to accomplish many pieces of original art. The pieces of art were those among our choice, and what we wanted to create. After taking risks throughout the whole year, we took those skills and created more art. However, I still developed the skill of tie dying and creating a shirt with a spiral design. Not just tie dye, but I created a water colored painting of candy. The candy was hot glued onto a smaller paper, where we had to draw to the best of our ability in a larger scaled version.
