The Shower By: Michael CaplaN

He kicked the shower door, in an attempt to attempt to break it open. It shattered, glass raining on the floor, becoming shards as tiny as grains of sand. However, one larger fractal of glass didn't hit the ground.

It found itself piercing through Carter's foot.

Just outside Chicago, in a cozy, quiet neighborhood, the moon had just departed as the sun began to rise that crisp, December morning. The light tan house with maroon windowsills was silent, except for the occasional, short whoosh of wind. There seemed to be a shadowy figure in between the tall grass shoots. The plants were flags, waving in the wind. When the wind stopped, as if by magic, the figure was whisked away.

Carter, a seventh grader who lived in the house, began to rise from his bed, to prepare for school. It seemed like a routine Thursday as the NBC 5 News at 6 turned on on the fingerprint-ridden silver screen. He began the process of making fresh biscuits and eggs for breakfast before he went to take a shower for the day.

Then, the wind whooshed, but for an unusually long, strong gust. Carter looked out the window, and to his surprise, a small oak tree had been uprooted in the wind. It slowly lifted from the ground, and smashed into the wall directly next to the window. Yikes, he thought, if that had gotten any closer, I would've been killed! He sighed in relief. Then, the TV turned off, and that figure showed up. Carter rubbed his eyes, paralyzed in fear. When he opened his eyes, the figure was gone.

Carter was creeped out. However, he had to stay focused on getting ready for school. So, he headed to the bathroom. He opened the pocket door, and got in the shower. It was newly remodeled, with subway tiles lining the walls and a large, glass door. Once the water was just the right temperature, he lathered his hair, and thought, How did that thing just up and disappear?

"Carter?" his mom called.

"Yeah?" He replied.

"It's 6:40, hurry up in there! You'll be late for the bus!"

"I'll be right out," he responded, "and it wouldn't kill me to miss it for one day!”

So, he reached out to turn the water off. As Carter's hand reached the knob, something grabbed his wrist, and changed the temperature to make the water hot. He tried to fight it, but it wouldn't give. He reached for the brushed metal door handle. As he attempted to push it open, it seemed to be locked shut, and it wouldn't budge, either. He shouted for help, but then, that thing grabbed him by the head and silenced him.

As the heat rose in the shower, Carter began to sweat and thought, This is my time. This is where I end. Then, he had a revelation. What will my family do without me? He fought his own judgement until his leg could make the motion he wanted it to. FInally, he kicked the shower door, in an attempt to break it open. It shattered, glass raining on the floor, becoming shards as tiny as grains of sand. However, one larger fractal of glass didn't hit the ground.

It found itself piercing through Carter's foot.

He screamed in agony, as the burning pain of the water began to increase dramatically because of the gash. The room began to grow darker, and soon enough, everything went black.

"Where am I? What happened?"

"You broke your foot," his mother said, "you're lucky to be alive right now." Carter sighed, remembering what had happened.

"At least you didn't get a paper cut, those are definitely more painful!” his dad joked nervously. Everyone chuckled.

“So, what happened in there?” asked his mother, eager for details.

“It's a long story,” he said, “so let's just say I won't be showering in there for a while.”

Carter closed his eyes to get some more rest. His family decided to go out and get some food for everyone to eat for dinner.

As soon as they left the room and closed the door, that shadowy figure looked in the window, watching Carter as he slept.
