School of Engineering launches Engineering150 engineering150.eng.ed.ac.uk

The School of Engineering invites our alumni to join us as we celebrate 150 years since Queen Victoria bestowed the first Regius Chair of Engineering in the UK to the University of Edinburgh

Professor Dame Ann Dowling, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, visited the School to launch our Engineering150 celebrations on 24 January 2018.

Dame Ann delivered the Regius Engineering Lecture, titled ‘Engineering a Future for All – the Power of Education, Research and Innovation’ at the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The School also hosted its Women in Engineering careers event, where alumnae spoke with students about their careers since graduating. Undergraduate and postgraduate students attended the event and had the chance to network with Dame Ann and the alumnae speakers, ask questions and seek advice. Dame Ann also met with members of the student teams HYPED, Formula Student and Innspace, who outlined their achievements to date and plans for the future.

Head of School Professor Hugh McCann and Professor Gordon Masterton showed Dame Ann the new Engineering150 timeline which has been installed in the Sanderson Building.

The HYPED team outlined their achievements to date including their participation in the SpaceX Hyperloop Challenge in California. They are an interdisciplinary student team developing Hyperloop technology, a high-speed intercity mass transport system.

A Women in Engineering careers event took place during the launch. Alumnae spoke to current students about their experiences and offered advice for women entering the engineering industry.
