Night Hoops Southside 2017 TERM 1 REVIEW

59 young people registered in total || Average per night attendance 36.5

Our 6 week tournament at CBC School in Freo (51 Ellen Street Fremantle) was a great success - CBC were extremely generous in donating their venue to us free of charge each week. We ran a 4 team tournament the whole term with great consistency in both coaches and teams attendance. This was great for building chemistry and togetherness within the teams as well as for developing trust and confidence in each team. Our numbers hovered around the 35-40 mark for the tournament meaning teams had subs and there was a good size at each week.

Volunteer Information

Volunteer numbers were healthy with 15+ registrations online and between 10-15 in attendance most nights. Kerri Mulford and Monique Kickett were present as youth workers on all of the evenings and Uncle Tim Kelly was present as Cultural Mentor.

We supplied pizza at the end of the night for the players and volunteers when we gave out our nightly awards! This is a highlight of the night for the youth!

Two games taking place at the CBC venue...

We had the City of Fremantle Arise Project running a 4 week creative workshop for our young people. The activities varied from creative design, painting and marketting, wool and yarn activities and group art activities throughout their time.

Transport was provided by City of Cockburn and PCYC and buses were driven by 2 of our team Nicolo Jelovsek and Rebecca Scott.

Overall behaviour was good at this torunament. We did have to red card one of our young people for anti social behavior on one of the nights. He is in frequent contact with the staff at the Cockburn Youth Centre and took this well and is looking forward to doing better in the term 2 program.

Referee's were supplied by the Cockburn Basketball Association and the Lakeside Lightning for this tournament.

Trainers were supplied by the Lakeside Lightning. The caliber was high including the 2016 SBL rookie of the year Daniel Grida and SBL starting shooter Hayden Bell. Both these guys loved the experienced and loved giving back.

Tournament Managers

Lennon Smartt ran this tournament again alongside Paul. A real Night Hoops success story was seeing Troy Kelly a former player and participant within the Night Hoops program returned as an Assistant Tournament Manager. Troy stepped up brilliantly and was well received by the group and is well respected among them.

2017 Term 1 Southside Runners Up

The tournament was a great success seeing consistent attendance week to week from individuals. We had 16 100% attendance awards a large number coming to 5 out of the 6 nights. This created a great familiar environment for the young people to come to each week and built trust and support within teams.

I want to give a special mention to the volunteers who tirelessly served and gave week in and week out and did a tremendous job. Also to the Lakeside SBL players for running the skills and also assisting with refereeing when and where needed. We are also very grateful to Cockburn Basketball Association for supplying officials for games and to CBC Fremantle for their generosity in allowing us to use their facilities each week free of charge. It was a great term and a fantastic start to 2017 for Night Hoops.
