Black Eyed Peas- Meet me Halfway

From the book I used Holden's quote from chapter 25, pg. 197, "Every time I came to the end of a block and stepped off the goddam curb, I had this feeling that I'd never get to the other side of the street. I thought I'd just go down, down, down, and nobody'd ever see me again." Then my quote from the black eyed peas, "Can you meet me halfway, right at the borderline Is where i'm gonna wait for you. Ill be looking out, night n' day. Took my heart to the limit and this is where i stay. I cant go any further than this." Both of these quotes represent the balance that a person needs. Holden feels as if things are never going to get better for him and the singer in the quote is explaining that he is lost without the other person. Both of the speakers are at the limit of happiness and they need something to pick them up and make them happy again.

J. Cole- 03' Adolescence

I used Holden's quote from chapter 2 pg. 15. "'I'm just going through a phase right now. Everybody goes through phases and all, don't they?'" With Holden's quote I saw a strong correlation with J. Cole's song, 03' Adolescence. For example, "Things change, rearrange, or so do I. It ain't always for the better dawg, I can't lie. I can't lie, I get high because the lows can be so cold." The speaker both relate to each other because they are both at a low time in their life. Both are at a low point in their life and both of them are not afraid to show their feelings. I believe both Jermaine and Holden know that their phase will end but they are both unsure when they will be happy again. Yet, J Cole uses deviance to get away from his feelings and Holden just admits his feelings.

Modest Mouse- World at Large

My quote from chapter 7 pg.52 resembles Holden wants to leave but he knows he will miss what he used to have, For example, "When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don't know why. I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I yelled at the top of my goddam voice, 'Sleep tight, ya morons!" The song " A world at large" also resembles a similar idea. "If the world's at large, why should I remain? Walked away to another plan. Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand." They both resemble the thought that they need to get away from all the stress in life. But, they question themselves on whether they will miss what they used to have. The speakers want to go away to another place because the current place is making them depressed but if they leave they know they might miss some of the things they had before.

Kanye West- Saint Pablo

Thinking he might die soon Holden says one of the most empowering sentences in the book. He explains,"The mark of an immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one." Which relates to Kanye West's lyrics, "My wife said, I can't say no to nobody, And at this rate we both gon' die broke. Got friends that ask me for money knowin' i'm in debt, And like my wife said, I still didn't say no. Both Kanye and holden are thinking about what would happen if they were to die. Holden explains how a mature person can make a difference in without dying for something. He points out that a mature person can live for something and stand up for that thing without dying. Similarly, kanye explains that even though he can't afford to help his friends out, he maturely finds a way to help others out even though it will affect him in the long run.

Bon Iver-Skinny love

Holden explains how he regrets explaining the truth because he starts to miss some people. For example, in Chapter 25 pg.214 Holden explains, ""Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." This quote relates the lyrics Gnash,"Come on skinny love just last the year pour a little salt we were never here" both of speakers relate to each other because they experience the hate with one another but they know they will miss some people and still love them. Although they don't want to have feelings and miss someone they know they will miss them. Skinny love basically means the love the author doesn't want to be there but he can't hides his feelings. I think Holden also knows that he will miss some people but he is just scared to admit it.
