Johnston Community School Friday 8th October 2021

Parent Calls

During the week beginning the 18th October, teachers will making telephone calls to all pupils' parents. This will be a five minute call to update parents on how pupils are settling in at the beginning of the academic year as we are unable to hold face to face meetings.

Shwmae Day!

We will be celebrating ‘Diwrnod Shwmae’ in school on Friday 15th October. Pupils are invited to wear something red to school on this day to help us celebrate. Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in lots of exciting Welsh activities during the morning.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in red and ready to have fun!

Parking Issues

We are very aware that many parents find our school car park very congested and it can be difficult to park at the end of the day. We just ask that we all be as patient as possible with each other as it very difficult to remedy the situation. In an ideal world, we would love to expand our parking capacity, but the reality is that this would take vital resources away from our pupils and our support in classes. We are investigating the possibility of ensuring safe walking routes whilst improving parking facilities behind the school building. We ask that parents refrain from parking on the school roundabout and grass verges.

School Vision

You may remember that during the summer term we conducted a parental questionnaire. As part of the questionnaire we asked parents for their views on our purpose as a school. Since then, we have spent time working with a range of different stake holders and developing our school vision. We are pleased to present our school vision.

We are a forward looking school that provides a nurturing environment for all. We have a creative and engaging curriculum steeped in learning opportunities and experiences linked to real world matters, encouraging all pupils to achieve their potential in everything they do.

Inset Days

We thought that it might be useful to provide a reminder of dates for the rest of the year.

  • We break up for Christmas on Tuesday 21st December.
  • We have a whole school inset day closure on Monday 31st January. LRC Pupils will be in school on this day.
  • Our final inset day will be on Monday 25th April.
  • We finish for the summer on Thursday 14th July.

Tesco Grants - Please Support our School!

During the summer term, you may remember the large orange tent which was located at the top of the school field. The tent was loaned to the school for free and was a huge success as pupils enjoyed reading Shakespeare, participating in circle times and relaxing in the open air. As a result of this success, we applied for a Tesco community grant to support us to purchase the tent and we have made it though to the final round! Our project has been put forward to a customer vote in Haverfordwest and Goodwick stores which will run from 1st October until 31st December 2021. If we win the vote Tesco will purchase us a brand new outdoor learning tent.

Haverfordwest Tesco have been very kind and have supported our school over a number of years. Please support us in this vote as every blue token will count!

Teaching and Learning Updates

Last week we welcomed Mrs. Groves, Headteacher of Coastlands School, to observe lessons and provide feedback to the teachers. She was extremely impressed by the behaviour and conduct of pupils, as well as the learning that pupils were engaging with. Pupils and teachers were a credit to the school and they should be proud of work!

Attendance

We are working hard to achieve our attendance goal of 95%. We are currently at 92%! This is slightly better than last week. Thank you for your support!

Any class that has 100% for a week wins a prize. Pupils who achieve 100% for a term will also win a small prize.

Updates on Our Outdoor Learning Projects

During the winter months we have a number of projects that pupils are going to be engaging with:

  • Building a sensory garden.
  • Reinstating a hedge.
  • Sowing wild flower seeds.
  • Digging our growing areas.

We would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs. Phillips, who donated several fruit trees for our school orchard! We look forward to planting them in the next few weeks.

Imam Visit

As part of their topic on Islam, the Imam from Milford Haven will be visiting year four pupils to talk about Islamic culture and traditions.

Special Visitor

On Wednesday, pupils in years three to six enjoyed meeting Sanna Duthie. Sanna holds the record for running the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and pupils enjoyed learning about her challenge. All classes participated in an extra running session outside! Diolch Sanna!
