TechSpace 2016: Year in Review Welcome! It’s been an exciting year across the network so we’re delighted to share the good news! We also have some great developments lined up for 2017 to tell you about!

TechSpace AS GAEILGE @ Ros na Rún

TechSpace as Gaeilge

With the support of the Dept of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, we gained significant ground to deliver TechSpace as Gaeilge (DAHRRGA)!

In February we provided digital media training to schools and youth projects in the Connacht region. A media making equipment grant was provided by the Department and a follow-up Creative Tech Support Session on how to use the equipment was held in Ros na Rún studios in the Autumn.

We will have an Irish speaking coordinator in place in 2017 through Foróige, who will support Irish language groups to produce amazing stuff...

Jim McCann TechSpace launch

Jim McCann TechSpace Launch @ Foróige's Big Picture, Tallaght

Phyl McCann, wife of the late Jim McCann from The Dubliners, contacted us to donate some of Jim's photography equipment to a Dublin-based TechSpace. Jim was known as a musician but he was also an avid photographer with quite a lot of experience and became a Nikon Photography Member.

Jim & Phyl's donation consisted of professional photography studio equipment such as cameras, backdrops, studio lights, tripods and an Apple iMac. This equipment was awarded to Foroige's Big Picture in Tallaght for young people aged 12-18, who now have the Jim McCann TechSpace Photography Studio for all educators and young people across the TechSpace Network to use!

On behalf of TechSpace, Camara Ireland and Foróige we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for this generous donation from Jim McCann’s family.

Cluster Coordinator Meetup

25 cluster coordinators, educators & young people converged on Camara HQ in September to give feedback on the redesign of TechSpace, while creative consultants helped us to plan for the Creative Tech Fest. The drone selfie explains it all!

3D Design and Printing Workshop

We welcomed our new supporter Stryker, the medical devices and equipment manufacturing specialist who, together with DesignerDojo, helped us to deliver a 2 day pilot in 3D Printing and Design workshop in Cork with YMCA Ireland.

This was followed by a 3D design workshop and expo at the Creative Tech Fest in November.

“It was a great 2 days and I learnt so much. At the start I didn't think that I would enjoy it and be good at it, but after the 2 days I really do think I have learnt so much and I am confident about how to use 3D and would be glad to do it all again and actually to pursue a career in 3D printing” - Emma, Cork YMCA

Thank you to everyone who attended on the day, it was amazing!

TechSpacer's hard at work on a Maker project.

In November, through our new partnership with the National Youth Council of Ireland, we were awarded with a grant from Science Foundation Ireland to expand our Maker / STEAM programme in 2017 and 2018. Stay tuned - we’ll be in touch in the new year with exciting further developments!

New TechSpace Website

In November we were delighted to launch our new website! On it you can find information about TechSpace, what we do, what trainings we deliver and who we work with.

It's super and we hope you take a minute to head on over to to check it out!

The new website was created by Karl who worked with us for months developing it and we think he did an amazing job! Karl can be seen here trying to hide behind Janice rather unsuccessfully. Thanks for everything, Karl!

A year in Creative Tech with Ciara-Beth

2015 TechSpacer of the year Ciara-Beth has been hard at work this year

"To say this year has been a little crazy is an understatement!

In January, I finally started a long journey down the road of app development, on a concept I've been working on for the past two years! It was really really exciting to finally see it come to life! October, I finally got to the beta testing phase for my app!

I was accepted to the BT Young Scientist Competition with this project, and will be visiting the RDS in January.

In February, I helped Matt and Jen run a training day for TechSpace as Gaeilge, a programme which I also helped introduce to my school. I also submitted a video to the Adobe1324 #WithMalala campaign.

Over the summer, my Foróige group organised a trip up to Windmill Lane Studios, and we got a taste of what a recording studio is like, as well as getting to see the sound effects being added to a movie trailer.

In September, I was lucky enough to be elected to the Digital Youth Council of Ireland, and I also got to meet with other creative consultants from around the country at our planning day for Creative Tech Fest. Unfortunately I couldn't attend the Creative Tech Fest this year, but don't worry, I'll be back!

Other than that, I pieced together a few videos, and started learning more about photography. It's been quite a year, but hopefully next year will be just as entertaining!!"

Watch Ciara-Beth's story below!

It's been a fantastic year with the network constantly growing
