Eyreton Pony Club Mandeville

Eyreton Pony Club is situated on the grounds of Mandeville Sports club reserve and is run by a commitee of dedicated parents of riders. We have 12 commitee members with most having positions, from President to Secretary, Groundsperson to Teams captain, Treasurer to Grants and Fundraising. Everyone plays their part and goes the xtra mile voluntarily to make the club a success. We operate under the New Zealand Pony Club Association and follow rules regulations and their charter and goals.

We currently have 45 riders signed up ranging from just 3 years old to 17 years, with 5 senior members over 18. We have adult riding members too that are the majority of mums or dads from these pc members.

We have 9 life members who have given so much back to the club over the years. We have also had some amazing success stories connected to Eyreton Pony Club with senior riders competing nationally and internationally.

We also offer ground membership where a one off annual fee allows riders full use of the grounds for the year.

We have a booking system online where casual users can book and use the grounds when they want to.

Many other Pony clubs and coaches also use the grounds for clinics and training.

Twice a month we run rallies on our grounds and riders meet to learn all about horse management and skills to improve the way we ride and care for our ponies and horses. The riders work towards certificates, starting from lead rein , then D, D+, C, C+ then B and A which is the highest certificate you can reach. The riders sit theory examinations for these certificates, gaining a badge when they pass. Rallies are run by our head coach and other guest coaches are called in to teach in smaller groups.

We have lots of fun at our Christmas Rally which is a dress up and fun and games rally for prizes, everyone makes a big effort for best dressed pony and rider.

We also compete against other pony clubs with the many competitions that are held throughout the year, either on our grounds or on other pony club grounds. Team competitions are always fun and team training is held prior to competitions. These can vary from dressage competitions to Show jumping and one day events which include dressage, showjumping and cross country all in one day, or 3 day events where each discipline is ridden each day.

These events can be near or far, with teams travelling all over the South Island to compete. Eyreton have been very successful in Eventing and consistently had wins in the last few years with team events, recently winning the South Island showjumping Champs in January 2019 in Mosgiel and Springston Trophy in 2015 when we hosted this prestigious pony club event here at MSC.

We try to organise camps twice a year where we have a variety of learning opportunities for all as well as exploring many different parts of Canterbury , having lots of fun sleeping in shearing sheds or horse floats or tents.

We have an amazing commitee member who organises grants and funds from various providers to allow us to further extend the facilities, grounds, resources and for Pony club coaching. Our biggest fundraiser each year is our 2 x one day event where riders of all ages and stages come to the Eyreton grounds and compete in over two days, with classes for littlies from 45 cms to the experts jumping 1metre 10 cms.

Eyreton pony club moved from the old pony club grounds at Mandeville Sports centre to new grounds still in the MSC site but backing onto North Eyre Rd in 2015. This gave us a much bigger area where a national standard cross country course was designed and built across four paddocks for the Springston trophy event in October 2015.

We moved a relocatable building from Rangiora township onto the grounds and fitted it out with a kitchen and furniture it in 2016. We received building compliance in 2017. Around the grounds, the commitee has added new planting’s, storage, fences moved and banks and fenced areas developed for equestrian purposes.

Eventing Canterbury has been one of our partners and have worked with us to develop the cross country course, build it, extend it and the ongoing maintainence of this and we thank them for their ongoing support. We also need to Thank Richard Belcher who works tirelessly to maintain the grounds and the support of MSC, the Waimakariri District council and Oxford Ohoka Board who have helped us with developing our Pony club spaces.

We have a five year strategic plan where we will continue to work on goals and aspirations for Eyreton pony club to continue to grow and develop its membership through the hard work of the commitee and the relationships it has with MSC, WDC, ESNZ and the surrounding community and to further established the grounds with storage sheds, yards, a wash down bay and arena and develop a great equestrian facility not only for Eyreton Pony Club but for all to enjoy.
