Notes and diagrams recorded in my notebook help keep me focused on my vision for the painting.

Working with a composite photo I composed in Photoshop, I drew sketch that will be the watercolor painting I envision. Using the Image>adjustments >hue/saturation sliders in Photoshop, I created this late-afternoon scene. This is the image that I will paint from. My aim is to use the photo comp as a reference to paint from. During the process of painting, I invariably add my own flourishes and edit on the fly, shaping and enhancing the image until I am satisfied with it. The end is to create a painting that captures the mood of the original reference image through the watercolor color medium.

Next , I discuss color
