DISTRICT-WIDE STUDENTS

CENTRAL AND WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Twenty students from both Central and West baked over 500 cookies for MCSA and nursing homes to decorate for the holiday season! The students mixed ingredients and did everything from scratch.

8th grade geometry students from both Central and West had a learning day at Carver Pump as they begin collaboration with a work-related issue.

COLORADO ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Hines' kindergarten class celebrated this week with a winter party and had a special visit from the North Pole!

FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

Lots happening this week throughout Franklin Elementary: students enjoyed Frankie the therapy pig, rang the Salvation Army Bell, and got ready for their annual holiday concert! Local teachers and staff also visited Frankie for the first time.

Franklin Kindergartners in Ms. Harder's class went to the North Pole on the Polar Express on Wednesday and enjoyed some hot chocolate!

GRANT ELEMENTARY

Miss Dindinger’s Begindergarten class at Grant had a polar express pajama party... and a very special visitor!

Mrs. Dusenberry and Mrs. Schliesman’s classes synergized to make Gingerbread Men cookies! What a win-win!

JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY

Jefferson PTO held a Winter Family Event. Families painted ornaments, made picture frames, decorated cookies, had fun with a winter photo booth, and met with Santa and Mrs. Claus!

Mrs. Hill's DHH class at Jefferson decorated Gingerbread men after reading the story The Gingerbread Man. Mrs. Brogly made real gingerbread for the students to smell and taste.

MADISON ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Skidmore's kindergarten class enjoyed Gingerbread cookies this week!

Ms. Ward's Second Grade Class made cards for the residents of the nursing home in Muscatine. Merry Christmas everyone!

Madison students met their goal of 25 office referral free days and enjoyed a day with the bounce house! Way to go Madison students!

Madison students had a special visitor on Thursday - the Grinch!

Students in Mrs. Holder's art classes finished their a "Holidays Around the World" projects.

MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY

Students in Ms. Pedersen's class had a busy week this week preparing for the upcoming holidays!

McKinley Student Council held a toy drive for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

McKinley students got a special hot chocolate treat on Thursday!

MULBERRY ELEMENTARY

Mulberry K-1 students sharpened the saw with Polar Express activities.

Mrs. McDonald’ 5th grade class at Mulberry had a surprise visitor on Tuesday as a reward for good behavior and hard work. One of Mrs. McDonald’s 6-week old Pygmy goats spent the day frolicking with the very excited class, along with many other Mulberry classes that came in to visit!

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Mrs. Duffe's 6th grade math students at CMS learned how to represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles. They also used the nets to determine the surface area of the three-dimensional figures. Each student then had the opportunity to practice there skills by determining the net and surface area of their very own gingerbread house! ​

Central 6th graders in Mrs. Beatty's Social Studies classes are kicking off their Asia unit with some cultural activities. They are making sushi and learning origami.

MUSCATINE HIGH SCHOOL

The MHS Key Club collected over 50 coats for children and adults this month! Thanks to all the MHS Students and Muscatine Community members who donated. Coats have been shared with the Muskie Lockers at MHS, CMS, and WMS. If you know of a child or adult who may need a coat - contact Jen Keltner at jen.keltner@mcsdonline.org and we will try and help you out. We have a huge range of sizes! Following Winter Break, all remaining coats will be donated to MCSA or shared with surrounding communities.

For some students, there are many places and events to visit during the Christmas holidays. For others, however, school is the only place where they can feel the holiday spirit. This holiday season, English Learning team at MHS and student volunteers have been busy creating and distributing cards and gifts to all El students as we try to bring the holiday spirit into our school and into our community.

Thanks to Mrs. Calderon for the inspiration and to everyone who helps us to make Christmas a magic holiday.

Mrs. Walker's English Learning 11-12 class brought donations & took a tour of MCSA for their semester final. It was an eye-opening experience for all, and gave a great look at the resources provided in our community.

DISTRICT-WIDE STAFF

Over 30 staff from across the district volunteered to participate in a recent CPR training. Each building had representation, including teachers, paras, secretaries, nurses, coaches, counselors, and administrators.

Educational Yoga at the Board Office. Allison Phelps led a session with 36 MCSD Staff on relaxation strategies that can be effective in and outside of the classroom. Next Yoga session will be on Jan. 8 from 4-5:15pm.
