HPS Austin Monthly MAy 2018 Edition

Message from the Superintendent

Gina Gregory, Austin Area Superintendent

May is a busy season at Harmony Austin because it signifies a season of celebration and completion of an academic year. Each of our campuses celebrated Cinco De Mayo in diverse ways to capture the heritage of our students. In Pflugerville, our students showed their community impact by participating in acts of service. Our outreach coordinators were awarded for the efforts throughout their community. Two of our campuses received a Gold ranking in U.S. News Annual Report on Best High Schools, and over the summer we will connect with Rice University and allow our students to study from the most talented in STEM. We are delighted to continue the rich history of every Harmony graduate being accepted to college. We are very proud of our graduates and wish them the best in their future endeavors. As we close this school year and begin looking forward to next year, we say to you: Enjoy your summer!

Dedicated Staff

HPS Austin is staffed with committed and talented educators from around Texas and the globe. Our dedicated staff use a whole child approach to education and do whatever it takes to help our students' reach their goals. Each month, we are honored to introduce and highlight one of the amazing team members from the Harmony family.

Harmony Rides

“The race's start date actually fell on Jonah's birthday this year, April 28th, which made the ride even more special. Some of my students and their families came to the finish line at Circuit of the Americas. The amount of support and encouragement that showed up throughout this journey has been incredible.” said Ms. Houck

Ms. Houck, 5th grade teacher at HSPS and Ms. Taylor teacher at HSACP accompanied Harmony parent, Mr. Araujo, along with three other family members to ride the impressive 168 miles from South Houston to Austin on April 28th - 29th. The MS-150 ride is designed to be a fundraising event to support research for a cure and to help people struggling with MS (multiple sclerosis). However, the two teachers “rode to be closer to Jonah” said Ms. Taylor. Jonah Araujo was a 5th grade student at HSPS that tragically lost his life earlier in the 2017-18 school year.

“This family is devoted, open-minded, open-hearted, and strong for their kids, family, and friends.” says, Ms. Houck. And Harmony Public Schools is eager to reciprocate that support, and proud of the community involvement these two dedicated staff members have engaged in on behalf of their beloved student.

Harmony In The Community

(Rundberg Educational Advancement District) Students are in the beginning stages of an initiative to beautify the Rundberg community in a series of projects. Real World Economics

As part of a final project, graduating seniors in Economics class are required to prepare a business plan for a concept that they have developed. The students end the four-week-long project with formal presentations to members of the Pflugerville business community.. “They receive constructive criticism and feedback by individuals who have been successful in their field and are eager to share their experiences and knowledge with the students,” says Economics teacher, Jeremy Lippart. The goal is for students to get real-world exposure to expectations of the work force and at minimum practice soft skills needed for the transition to adulthood.
