Theme:

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby", is about self-discovery, and reveals people's hidden truths. This is evident in the character of Gatsby, especially in chapter 6, where we learn more about Gatsby.

"James Gatz-that was really, or at least legally, his name." (Pg. 98) "It was 1919. I only stayed 5 months. That's why I can't really call myself an oxford man."(Pg. 129).

Jay Gatsby. Party Scene.

Indirect: "Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once."(Pg. 44)

Direct: "And it was from Cody that he inherited money - a legacy of twenty thousand dollars." (Pg. 100)

Nick Carroway

Indirect: "Just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages you've had" (Pg. 1)

Direct: "I wanted no more riotous excursionswith privileged glimpses into the human heart."

Symbol: The green light on Daisy's dock.

In the book, the green light is a symbol to represent Gatsby's hope as he holds on and guide to his feelings of his and Daisy's future.

"The Dream (that) must have seen so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it."
