Location of all the Processes
  • Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the mitochondria
  • The Krebs Cycle occurs in Matrix of the mitochondria
  • Oxidative Phosphorylation occurs in the cristae of the mitochondria
Before anything happens, Glycolysis has to occur...

Glycolysis is the process of splitting Glucose to make 2 pyruvate, 2 ATP, and 2NADH + 2H+

What is made...

  • 4 ATP formed - 2 ATP used ; [net of] 2 ATP
  • Glucose ; 2 Pyruvate & H2O
  • 2 NAD+ + 4e- + H+ ; 2 NADH + 2H+
After Glycolysis, if oxygen is not present then fermentation occurs!

Fermentation: two types; only occurs is oxygen is not present

Alcohol: formation of alcohol from sugar; characteristic of yeast & some bacteria.

Lactic Acid: occurs in the muscles, happens when not enough oxygen reaches muscles; causes minimal muscle pain.

But, if oxygen is present then Cellular Respiration occurs!

Cellular Respiration: has two parts; happens only when oxygen is present.

Krebs Cylce: occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria

  • 2nd step to cellular respiration (gycolysis comes 1st)
  • pyruvic acid is broken down into CO2
  • more NADH are made
  • FADH2 are also made
  • Release 2 ATP

Cellular Respiration occurs in the cristae of the mitochondria

  • Also known as oxidative phosphorylation
  • 3rd step of cellular respiration
  • NaDH & FADH2 are used
  • High energy electrons from the Krebs Cycle are use to turn ADP to ATP
  • A total of 34 ATP is made
In the end a total of 38 ATP is made, concluding that cellular respiration forms more ATP and is more reliable; fermentation is just a backup only forming 2 ATP in total.

But...Why is this so important?

Local Impact:

  • locally, as in our bodies, has importance because it keeps our cells alive our body able to function.
  • Plant wise, it enables plants to keep functioning and releasing oxygen to us.
  • It also keeps the amount of energy stable and always available.

Global Impact

  • It is said that Cellular Respiration effects Global Warming due to the fact that it contributes to the adding of CO2
  • Co2 is stated to stay trapped in our atmosphere for 100 years.
  • Cellular Respiration is seen as a negative effect on our earth.
