Eliminating Fragments Payton Gardella

A sentence that lacks a subject or a verb or both and does not express a complete thought.

There are four ways to eliminate fragments:

1. Add a subject or join the fragment to another sentence

Incorrect: Is a talented actor, producer, and musician.

Correct: Johnny Depp is a talented actor, producer, and musician.

2. Add a verb or join the fragment to another sentence

Incorrect: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. He was assassinated in 1865.

Correct: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated in 1865.

3. Omit the subordinating conjunction or connect the fragment to an independent clause

Incorrect: Because he pioneered the chickenpox vaccine. Edward Jenner is known as the "Father of Immunology".

Correct: Edward Jenner pioneered the chickenpox vaccine. He is known as the "Father of Immunology".

4. Attach a phrase to a related sentence

Incorrect: German shepherds are the second most popular dog to own. Notably for their exceptional loyalty.

Correct: German shepherds are the second most popular dog to own, notably for their exceptional loyalty.

Practice Problems

  1. Is my favorite season.
  2. Since Lorenzo cooks.
  3. After the rain stops.
  4. Maddy has a dog. Named Clyde.
  5. Went to school.
  6. Although I was tired. I couldn't fall asleep.
  7. Sings well.
  8. Because Ray goes on sunrise hikes. He goes to bed early.
  9. The large dog with the floppy paws.
  10. Goes skiing every weekend.
