MAKING PHOTOGRAPHS TO PERFECTION.

by Nicola Di Battista

I have known Donato Di Bello for many years and I consider him one of the most important Italian photographers of his generation. I am an architect and I certainly would not presume to go into his very profession, or better to say in his art, seen as discipline of photography, but given the work presented here I will try to give an architect's point of view and briefly substantiate the many qualities I recognize in it. The photographs are certainly the result of an enlightened client who has asked to record and describe each phase of a construction site, that is a rare thing we must greet with great interest, considering the public relevance played by every new urban construction site in citizen's lives. A construction is always and in any case an excellent collective act, even when it comes to private buildings, because a public or private construction changes the space, especially the living space of all of us. From this point of view, someone would dare to say that every new construction, or even every urban redevelopment or regeneration should necessarily end with a photographic documentation telling a story; an obligation which has to be included in the tender specification...

...So, we would gradually have a sort of encyclopedic collection of what mankind builds to inhabit this land. As far as the photographs shown here are concerned, I would like to recall how Donato's professional interest have always ranged in various fields over the years, from the cinema - his original passion - to photography of objects and, later, to the architectural photography. It is precisely in this last context that, in my opinion, he has given us his masterpieces. I remember that since his first architectural photos I saw a long time ago, the author managed to give them a kind of tectonicity, supported by a great professional ability of making them simply right, precise and definitive...

...Those photos can naturally reproduce the physicality carried by architecture, a physicality represented as an obvious and clear fact. Thanks to his ability to fully catch the true meaning of a building, those photos have immediately conquered many architects becoming a reference and making Donato the favorite photographer of many of them, myself included. Now, his latest works add two new extraordinary elements to his innate ability to make architectural photographs, that is a skill he has always had: the human being at work, and other various figures that follow one another in each phase of a construction site in comparison to a finished one. Great and momentary figures - being aware of how to look at them - do not last long because they overlap, change and hide together with the advancing of the work itself, until they disappear completely in the final phase of the construction site, after having delivered the construction to the client or to everyone else who is going to live there. These two elements, that are so far and yet so close and important - being a construction no less than a collective act - realize little by little an object of work where men and materials of construction - wisely manipulated by his photographic art - are able to transmit there the most authentic value of a constructive act...

...The subject of the photography does not matter, whether it could be an engineer, a site manager or even a worker; their figures remind us that buildings always combine together the most sophisticated minds and technologies, with the ability and the know-how of a craftsman. Now, those are the figures that Donato manages to transform into expressive forms, proud to participate in the construction of each building, as everyone of them always loves to say: "I am there". From there it will come a building site with its magic, its wonders, its viscera, its decks, its dust, its temporary structures and its endless epiphany of colours and matter. Here they exist in unison, human beings and motionless materials become one, being able to touch us and giving back the most profound sense of the art of building, the building to perfection, the building to "live". In this case , the photo is no longer just a simple documentation but it becomes interpretation and, sometimes, art.

Thank you Donato for your work.
