Lord of the Flies GILLIGAN'S Island

Gilligan's Island

Island Dangers

What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island. Be specific and explain your answers.

On this island many dangers are waiting to occur. One of the biggest concerns are finding clean water and edible food. With out water your metabolism slows and it causes mood swings, you have to work harder to do daily activities. If you don't have food and don't eat your body will start to break down and you can die within three weeks, if you don't get sick from lack of immune system and essential vitamins and minerals first. Your body needs heat you need warmth. Fire equals warmth but, if you don't know how to start a fire or keep it contained you could be very injured and maybe die. Don't forget about the animals, you don't know when a rabid monster going to come out of the woods and attack you or a bug is going to bite you. Especially spiders, if your laying on the ground and one of those nasty things is crawling towards you, you need to know how to kill it.

  1. Travel in 2+
  2. Don't go out at night
  3. Share resources
  4. Clean up after yourself
  5. Communicate effectively
  6. Do your job
  7. Do not kill each other

Most Important Rule

In my opinion the most important rule is number five, communicate effectively. Communicating effectively means to get a point across using easy to understand terms and conditions. In other words making sure someone understands you and you are both on the same page. One of the other rules is to travel in 2 or more people but if you don't communicate that group wouldn't work. Not communicating makes the activity your doing harder to understand and harder to work with others. Then that would cause confusion which would lead to complications which could result in death. But rule number seven clearly states do not kill each other. So instead of killing each other and breaking rules just communicate effectively, it makes life easier.

The theme of this novel is survival, the setting of this novel contributes to this theme. These boys are stranded on an island. On this island they have to find a way and to learn how to survive. The oldest boy is twelve years old, he doesn't know how to take care of younger children and keep them alive on a dangerous island. For example, if you start a fire that gets out of hand, and one of the little boys that are on the island with you gets out of sight and burns to death, his blood is on your hands. The older boys have to find food for the littluns and themselves. They have to have a secure shelter for when it rains. It's a lot for a couple 12ish year olds to survive and make sure everyone else survives to.

Is this Island Good?

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. This is always an example of foreshadowing. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

This novel contains many examples of irony, this quote is just one example. In the novel Ralph stating that the island is good creates irony. The way this statement creates irony is that the island is the opposite of good. One kid has already died, their is little food just fruit and wild pigs, and not for sure yet but now according to the littleluns there is a beast. These problems prove this island is not good. You need food, water and shelter. People can't just be dying because people are irresponsible and it's hard to protect all these little curious children from a beast. If there is a beast... The island is almost exactly the opposite of good, its driving these boys mad.

The Beast

When the idea of a beast was first introduced, I pictured it resembling a large snake, dragon type creature. As the story went on, maybe the beat is more of a figurative character. Every sinner has a furure, every saint has a past. In my opinion the beast is the feeling of regret, sadness or loneliness. The regret comes from the little boy with the birth mark being burned alive. Sadness and loneliness, they are all lonely and sad because their family members are dead and if they are rescued they won't have any one. The beast is their way of expressing their feelings.

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

The boys have given many things up to show they are no longer trying to follow rules and are now operating on instinct. Simon goes off alone to his secret safe place and they all have extremely long hair (for a boy). They have split themselves into two separate tribes and are competing. They have also hunted down and killed a pig. But wait it gets better, they put the head of the pig on a stick! On a stick for cryin out loud! A little after that they are literally hunting one of the other boys. And a some time before that they chant in a circle and beat Simon to death thinking he's the beast. They have lost their humanity. These boys are completely acting on instinct and have no longer tried to follow the rules.

Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

  1. "I do"
  2. "Do you take this man/women"
  3. "Forever and for always"

The phrase "forever and for always" helps in this situation. It helps because it is used to show commitment. Commitment is important to this situation because Ralph was committed to killing that pig. But the reason to kill the pig was because he thought he had to. When reading the text you can infer that Ralph wants to sacrifice the pig. But to whom? Maybe the beast or maybe he just got caught up in all of the excitement? But is the beast real? Reading on you find out that Simon was right when he said something along the lines of what if they were the beast, what if the beast is inside of us. Simon also shows commitment, he was always trying to do good and make everything be good.

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph.

There was a flash of lightning in the distance, thunder boomed with excitement and giant drops fell upon the boys heads. All the commotion scared the littluns and they began to cry. As the storm got louder the littluns began to run around screaming. Jack told everyone to come on lets do the dance, trying to gain a sense of control. The dance became a chant as they circled. They all had sharpens sticks and the littluns jumped out of the circle. The chant got louder and louder "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" (Golding 152). The circle opened up as a thing crawled out of the forest. The boys all caught up in the excitement didn't realize that the thing that crawled out of the forest was Simon. He was curled into a ball as the boys beat him screaming out about a man on a hill. He struggled twards the edge of a rock to water and sand. The boys chased after him off the rock jumped on him and there where no words or movement. Simon was dead.

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

Groups fill many needs for people, and being apart of one can include both positive and negative aspects. When people are upset they like having someone to talk to. Most people are looking for support and when they need it, it's nice to have a group to talk to. Your group can be family or friends but sometimes it's nice to talk to someone outside your circle. Talking to friends can have anegative outcomes. Friends are not always trust worthy but sometimes you don't find that out till its to late. They can spread rumors, tell lies or make fun of you about what you have going on. There are positive things that can come out of talking to friends. I've always had one really close friend and other people would be more like "friends". So I would just talk to one person about how I feel about certain things. Then again there is always a chance of a negative outcome for everything that happens.

Rules or Kill

“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer.

Using the quote, in my opinion I think that it is better to have rules and agree that to hunt and kill. If you have rules and agree life is great and everything goes smoothly. On the other hand if you just go on a rampage and hunt and kill everyone no one will be left. You will be all alone with only your thoughts. What's the point of living life if you don't have a friend or someone to spend it with. Even if you are stuck on an island with the same people. It's better to have a group of friends than being all alone. So if I really need to tell you this, have rules and agree not hunt and kill each other. I hear it's inhuman.

Picture and Quote

"If only they could send us something grownup . . . a sign or something" (Golding 94). Days

I chose this quote because it creates a sense of irony. Irony is when you expect one thing but another happens. This quote expresses irony on how this group of kids is asking for a grownup or help from a grownup. Kids want to be independent and able to do things on their own. Even know they need their parents help, they don't admit it because they think they are able to do things on their own. They want to be grown up. That brings me to why I chose a child trying to fit into their parents' shoes. This little girl (assuming a girl) is trying to be grown up by wearing her moms shoes. The photo and quote together represents the irony of a child wanting to be a grown up when the quote states a child asking for an adult.

Hello, future Ms. Lyda's students. The Lord of the Flies is a great book. But if I were to rate it I'd give it a 5 out of 10. I'm not saying the book the book was terrible but it wasn't one of my favorites. There was some aspects that I liked about the book like, the survival theme. I liked the survival theme because, I'm into things that are challenging and require you to expand your mind. On the other hand I did not like what they did with the pig on the stick, it grossed me out. I'm not big on reading but the book wasn't that bad. My favorite part of reading this novel was when Ms. Lyda would read. The little British man in the box was okay, I just enjoy Ms. Lyda reading to us instead. Especially if she took us out side to read, it was nice. The blog all together wasn't to bad as long as you kept up with it. Some entries were a little difficult but that was only because I didn't pay attention. The book wasn't my favorite, the blog was okay but I didn't hate it. If you like reading and writing this your activity. Since I'm not a huge reader or writer this activity was okay. Something different but not in a bad way.
