Islam By: Alex Gale & Danielle Hanson

Islam was founded by Muhammad, who was the main prophet around the 6th or 7th century. The religion was founded near Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula of the east. Islam was developed from both Judaism and Christianity.

The holy book is called Quran. The Quran is their book of rules. Their place of worship is called a mosque. The very first mosque was the courtyard in the home of Muhammad. Today, many mosques are large buildings with beautiful towers and domes. The religious leader is called an Imam. Imam may lead Islamic worship services, serve as community leaders, and provide religious advice.

These images shows the holy book, the place of worship and the religious leader.

Islam practices five principles/pillars which are: Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj. Shahadah is sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith. Salat is performing ritual prayers in the proper way five times each day. Zakat is paying an alms tax to benefit the poor and needy. Sawm is fasting during the months of Ramadan. Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca.

The main holidays that the religion celebrate are Ashura, Ramadan. and Eld-al-Adha. Ashura is all about the martyrdom. Ramadan is holy months fasting. During Ramadan, Muslims honor the time when they believe that Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran. Eid-al Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Abraham.

Within the religion, there are 2 main groups; the Sunni and the Shia. There is a higher percentage of Sunni than Shia in the world today. They both blame each other for distorting the true meaning of the Quran. The split between them happened after Muhammad's death. The Sunni and Shia disagreed on who should be the new prophet. The Shia thought that the new prophet should be a descendant of Muhammad whereas the Sunni thought anyone could be the prophet.
