Now that fall sports have come to a close, the winter season is in full swing. Ice hockey, men’s basketball, and swimming have all competed in contests of some kind, but women’s basketball started a week later than normal this year, and they have yet to play a game. With four returning seniors, the Greenhills Women’s Varsity Basketball Team is eager to get their season underway and capture their first win.
Unfortunately, the team has already encountered a major setback with the injury of junior guard and captain Sabine Boutros. Sabine has been a varsity player since freshman year and has played a major role each season. Sabine still seemed very optimistic about her chance to return later on in the season, stating, “the doctor told me that I would be out for a large part of the season, but I may be able to come back in time for playoffs.” Her chance of returning could be a big factor in the team’s ability to potentially make a playoff run.
Despite the setback, senior captain Moira Cummings said that she was excited for the season to begin. She believes that there is strong talent on the team and that they should be able to have another great season. Moira viewed Sabine’s injury as an opportunity for other players to improve. She admitted that the beginning of the season might be a bit “rough,” but added that it will motivate them because “everyone on the team will need to step up and get better to replace what we lost.”
The Greenhills Women’s basketball team has lost a critical player in Sabine, yet they’re excited to kick off their season on Tuesday when they play their first game at home against Huron Valley Lutheran. They’ll need a strong student section to help propel them towards a win, so come out and support. Go Gryphons!
