Worshipping the Holy God A Walk through Revelation

"I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance." Revelation 1:12-16 NIV

What would you do if you were in this scene? How would you respond to Jesus?

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:17-18 NIV
The hand that holds the stars touches you. The majestic, holy One comes close.

Revelation 2-3 - the letters to the seven churches in Turkey

Revelation 3:22 - "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." This line is repeated to each church.
The Holy God wants to be heard and responded to in worship. Listening to God is a big part of our worship. Responding to God in the right way makes our worship complete.

"After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal." Revelation 4:1-6 NIV

God is beautiful in his holiness. No one... nothing... compares with him. His beauty is compelling. It draws out worship from us. The reason we don't worship is because we don't see the beauty of God.

"Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." Revelation 4:8 NIV

Do you ever feel like you run out of words when you worship? Does it seem like your songs and phrases do not do justice to who God is? Why?

What do the elders keep repeating day and night?

Do you think it's okay to keep repeating certain lines or phrases in our worship? Why or why not?

"...the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne." Revelation 4:10 NIV

What kind of response of worship do the elders show here?

How can we reflect this type of worship today?

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” Revelation 4:11 NIV

Worship means to "give worth to" or give "glory, honour and power" toward... In the passage above, what is the reason that God is worthy of worship?

In Revelation 5:9-10, what are other reasons stated for why God is worthy of worship?

From Revelation 4:11 - 5:14, we see that God is worthy because...

  1. He is the Creator.
  2. Jesus has brought people from every tribe and nation back into relationship with the Father by his own sacrifice on the cross.
  3. He has given authority back to the church to reign with him as priests.
  4. Jesus has been raised to the highest place and sits on the throne.
Read Revelation 7:9

Describe this scene. What do you think this will look like, sound like, feel like?

What kind of worship will this produce in you?

"Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: 'Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.'” Revelation 19:6-8 NIV

What are the responses (actions) in worship to this mighty God?

Rejoice / Be Glad / Give him glory.

Are these responses in worship typical of your worship times (personal and corporate)? Why or why not?

Our view of God will determine our worship.
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!' Then he said, 'Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.'” Revelation 21:1-5 NIV

What does the passage above tell you about God?

Does the thought of who God is and what he will do fill you with excitement? How could you respond in worship to him today?

"Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.” Revelation 22:7 NIV

How will you want to be worshipping when Jesus returns?
