Information and Support Groups

The Autism Advisor Program is running information and support groups for parents and carers of children 0-7 with autism. The purpose is to answer questions commonly asked by parents following a diagnosis and to give information about relevant topics, including:

Week 1: Reflections on the diagnostic process

Week 2: What is the NDIS and how to access the scheme

Week 3: Encouraging communication through the use of visual supports

Week 4: Self-care for families and planning for the future of the group

To register for a current group click here and select "Autism Advisor Program" on the drop down menu for "Search by Service". We are also taking expressions of interest to find out which locations have the greatest need. If there are no groups currently running in your area, send us an email to register your interest and we will be in touch when we have a group running near you: autismadvisor@autismspectrum.org.au

Upcoming groups are happening in Mudgee, the Far North Coast, The Inner West of Sydney and the Central Coast.

Post Diagnostic Support and Education: Building Parent Capacity and Understanding

An Autism Advisor is available to talk to you individually about your child’s diagnosis through our Post Diagnostic Appointments (PDAs). These appointments are planned and paced to suit your needs and availability. You can choose one or all of the following topics to be covered:

• What is autism: understanding my child’s strengths and difficulties

• Next steps: funding and early intervention options

• Individual Autism Profile

• Parent/carer self-care and support

To register your interest in the Post Diagnostic Support and Education program call 1300 978 611 or register your interest.

Individual Autism Profile

An advisor can help you develop an Individual Autism Profile for your child. This is a document that can articulate an accurate description of your child, their needs and specific strategies that can help. Over the course of 1-3 conversations, you will help the advisor understand how autism presents in your child across several domains, including communication, quality of life, social skills and more. The advisor will then be able to develop tailored strategies that anyone can implement at home, and discuss these with you. This service is perfect for families who are awaiting a funding package and want to get started with something in the meantime.

If you are interested in developing a profile for your child, please call 1300 978 611 or email us on autismadvisor@autismspectrum.org.au

Information line for the families of new diagnosed children and families already accessing AAP and ED services:

You can call the Autism Advisor Program at any time to ask questions about autism, funding options and therapy. We can also answer questions about the transition from the old Helping Children with Autism package to the NDIS. Call us on 1300 978 611 or email autismadvisor@autismspectrum.org.au
