Join us in celebrating

ICPRB's 80th Anniversary

Authorized by an Act of Congress in 1940, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) is a scientifically-focused, non-regulatory Compact agency of the jurisdictions in the Potomac River watershed.

The Potomac River's water quality has in many ways vastly improved, but threats to the river (population increases, land use change and growth of impervious surface, chemical contaminants, and nutrient and sediment enrichment) require regional attention. The regional efforts needed to address these challenges are set out in ICPRB's Comprehensive Plan.

Join us in celebrating our 80th anniversary with a ride in the Cherry Blossom Paddle-Wheeler on the Potomac River. Leaving out of Alexandria, Virginia, this invitation-only event will include elected officials, key regulators, ICPRB Commissioners, ICPRB Staff, press, representatives from stakeholder groups in the Basin, sponsors, and a celebrity speaker (TBD). Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

Theme

One Basin, One Future. Trees will be featured throughout the event. The traditional 80th anniversary gift is oak. A variety of native oak trees can be found throughout the Potomac River Basin. In addition, native trees highlight the importance of forested riparian buffers to water quality. Sponsorship levels will be denoted by specific oak trees.

Awards

At the event, the ICPRB will present awards to five outstanding individuals who personify the attributes of the namesakes of these awards.

  • Montgomery Meigs Award (Drinking Water)
  • Abel Wolman Award (Clean Water)
  • Rachel Carson Award (Aquatic Life)
  • Gilbert Gude Award (Communication & Education)

Sponsorship

Sponsorships are available. Make a difference by helping fund our ambitious Potomac River Basin Comprehensive Water Resources Plan to ensure that the Potomac will fulfill the human and ecological needs for current and future generations. All proceeds will go to implementing the Comprehensive Plan. In addition to our appreciation, sponsors will receive an array of benefits.

Potomac River Basin Water Resources Comprehensive Plan

Vision

This plan provides a roadmap to achieving our shared vision that the Potomac River basin will serve as a national model for water resources management that fulfills human and ecological needs for current and future generations. The plan will focus on sustainable water resources management that provides the water quantity and quality needed for the protection and enhancement of public health, the environment, all sectors of the economy, and quality of life in the basin. The plan will be based on the best available science and data. The ICPRB will serve as the catalyst for the plan's implementation through an adaptive process in collaboration with partner agencies, institutions, organizations, and the public.

Purpose

The purpose of this plan is to identify and develop management recommendations for water resources issues of interstate and/or basin-wide significance. It aims to facilitate achievement of common goals, including protection of water supplies, drinking water sources, water quality, and aquatic life.

The Comprehensive Plan contains 14 recommendations:

...and a simple guide for actions we all can do to make a difference.
