Jim Crow Laws

One law of Jim crow was that a African American can not be shown a an equal to a white man so they can't shake hand. One other law was that an African American man can not show affection for each other in public or a white woman in public.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was a time in the United States where the stock market had crashed. People were living in poverty and some where hobo's, people who would ride around on trains with no job or home. The great Plains was a flat land good for farming, but it was struck by a drought. The Great Plains was struck by the dust bowl that had been caused by the drought. But something good rose out of this, the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a time of black music, entertainment, and poetry.

Abolishment of slavery

Abolishment of slavery was a great thing and a milestone for the United States, but this did not mark the end of prejudice towards African Americans. The Civil War broke out this time period was when the North and the South where fighting over the expansion of slavery into the western territories. " Designate the following states as in the rebellion, Arkansas,Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Suth Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia."The Emancipation Proclamaton, Jan. 1, 1863. Even then white people still continued to think they are better than Black people "Mr Simms only thinks she is better. In fact, he thinks she's better than Stacey or little man or Christopher John-" " Just 'cause she's his daughter?" I asked, beginning to think mr. Simms was touched in the head. " No, baby, because she's white." Roll of Thunder, hear my cry, pg 205.

Lynching

Lynching was used during the Great Depression. It is a unfair trail that usually resulted in the persons death. Lynching was used on African Americans who broke the Jim Crow laws. In the story Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, a character named T.J was going to be lynched because he was convicted of killing Jim Lee Barnett, a store owner, and steeling money and a pearl handled pistol. White people come to T.J's house and drag out his entire family and himself to lynch them. T.J gets hurt really bad by them and then taken up to Strawberry for a real trail. " And I cried for the things that had happened in the night and would not pass. I cried for T.J. For T.J. And the land." Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry, Pg.428
