Communication A Bible Study

Pray. Ask God to speak to you. He always communicates perfectly. Ask him to speak to you about your communication.
"We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check." James 3:2 NIV

Are you a perfect man, able to keep your whole body in check?

When was the last time that you made a mistake in your communication?

"Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts." James 3:5 NIV

How is boasting expressed? Give some examples (i.e. name dropping, over-attention on self in conversation, focus on own accomplishments).

How do you feel being on the receiving end of a boastful conversation?

"Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark." James 3:5 NIV

Explain how wrong communication can spread and destroy many?
Have you ever lied and then had to keep lying to "save" yourself? And a great forest is set on fire...
The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. James 3:6 NIV

The tongue has the potential to destroy your life.

How could this happen?

Read James 1:19-20

Read Proverbs 26:22-23

Read Proverbs 6:16-17

Read 1 Timothy 1:9-11. What categories of sin is lying paired with?

Read 2 Timothy 2:23-24

Foolish talk

Read Ephesians 5:4

Course joking

Read Ephesians 5:4

How should we use our mouths?

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29 NIV

Give examples of "wholesome talk."

How often could your conversations be characterized as wholesome? How quick are you to build others up in the way you talk?

"Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ." Ephesians 4:15 NIV

Give examples of speaking the truth in love.

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:18-20 NIV
Be filled with Spirit. Give him control over your words. You need his power to communicate well.
Speak to each other with God's words and God's songs. This will build others up for sure. Also read Colossians 3:16.

Give thanks.

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17 NIV

"...give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

If you continually give thanks, you will stay in the center of God's will for your life. So overflow with your thanksgiving to God and those around you.
