Standing Committee:

Permanent groups to oversee bills that deal with certain kinds of issues, continue from one Congress to the next, majority party in each house controls the standing committee

Examples:

Agriculture, rules, finance

Subcommittees:

Nearly all standing committees have several subcommittees, each one specializes in a subcategory of its standing committee's responsibility

Examples:

Health, Human Resources, Oversight, Select Revenue Measures, Social Security, Trade

Select Committees:

Temporary committees that study one specific issue and report their findings to the Senate of the House. Set up to last no more than one term

Examples:

Matters of great public concern, such as organized crime; overlooked problems, such as hunger; or problems of interest groups, such as owners of small business

Joint Committees:

Made up of members from both the House and the Senate, may be temporary or permanent, both political parties, coordinate the work of the two houses of Congress

Examples:

Joint Economic Committee, Joint Committee on Printing

Conference Committee:

A temporary committee set up when the House and Senate have passed different versions of the same bill.
