Project Description:

Collegiate recreation facilities rightly deserve praise for respecting their campus context or leveraging campus views, but few actively engage exterior space in more exciting ways than the Human Performance Center at Dixie State University.

From its rooftop courts to a V-shaped, glass-walled courtyard at street level, the facility exudes energy before patrons even enter its doors. Once inside, visitors are treated to a full complement of recreational amenities in a well-branded environment, with second-level hardwood and multipurpose courts floated above the natatorium and surrounded by fitness, climbing, instruction and lab spaces. Useful balcony square-footage extends off the interior, allowing for open-air functional training against the mountain-lined Utah landscape, and the indoor jogging track heads outdoors, where a two-lane ramp ascends to a loop around the roof perimeter.

Said one panelist, “I liked the way the building form reached out into the site to create interesting exterior space.” Added another, “I loved how the programming activated the rooftop. Mixing multiple programs creates overlap and crosspollination.”

“This is a very well-designed facility, where the energy inside is transmitted outside to enliven the street frontage. The use of interior color shows a talent for drama, without being overwhelming.” — Tracy Carusi

“This skillfully executed functional solution incorporates a long-span gym over a long-span natatorium and an innovative look at sport and recreation components.” — Katie Barnes
