John F. Kelly is the current Head of the Department, was founded on November 25, 2002. The Department of Homeland Security is a federal agency designed to protect the United States against threats. Its wide-ranging duties include aviation security, border control, emergency response and cybersecurity
One job that the Homeland Security does is aviation control. They make sure that flying in public airports is safer and make sure there are no threats of terrorism. They require all airlines flying to the U.S. from foreign countries to provide Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Records prior to departure and screen all bags to check for bombs or weapons that could injure anyone.
The department of Homeland Security focuses on preventing terrorism and enhancing security, securing and managing our borders, enforcing and administering our immigration laws, safeguarding and securing cyberspace and ensuring resilience to disasters.
The purpose of Border Control is to stop the movement of illegal weapons, drugs, contraband and people. The Border Patrol apprehends more than 1,000 individuals each day.
The DHS was created after the attack of the World Trade Center on 9/11. The DHS primarily focuses on the federal preparations to deal with terrorism while managing other duties.
Cyberspace occurs everywhere making it a very easy to steal information and money and are developing capabilities to disrupt, destroy, or threaten the delivery of essential services. Numerous amounts of cyber crimes can happen like child pornography and child exploitation conspiracies, banking and financial fraud, intellectual property violations, and other crimes, all of which have human and economic consequences. The DHS works to prevent these things from happening and protecting Americans and their personal information.
The DHS not only deals with terrorism but recently they have made a series ofsector-specific security plans. The plan outlines four goals for the sector, to drive development of protective programs and measures of success, sustain protection of public health and the environment, recognize and reduce risks, maintain a resilient infrastructure, and increase communication.
The DHS uses canines to effectively detect explosives, visible deterrence, and timely, mobile response to support rail stations, airports, passenger terminals, seaports, surface carriers, and other facilities.
The Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security, not only does it protect some of the highest ranking people of the United States but it is one of the oldest federal law enforcement agencies in the country and ranks among the most elite in the world.
