Chapter 15 Section 3 By Mikayla

Political parties didn't exist in the republic of Texas. But people did have groups that supported a candidate.

In the late 1840s Texans had the Democratic and Whig parties. The Democratic Party was very popular in Texas.

Democrats had represented farmers and small businesses owners. The Democratic Party was very popular in the south.

The Democratic Party was so strong that the governors elected between 1845 and 1857 were Democrats. There were a lot of problems within the Party though. They often fought among themselves.

Many whigs joined the Republican Party. By 1857 the Know nothing Party had disappeared.

War broke out two months after James Pinckney Henderson was sworn into office. While he was away Lieutenant Governor Albert C. Horton filled in for Henderson.
