Welcome to Ring Patterns, the Colliesonline.com feature in which we re-cap, month by month, the general achievements of the breed at specialties and all-breeds throughout the country. In July, at the all-breed shows, collies came away with 25 Herding Group placements, 1 National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show, and 25 National Owner-handled Series placements. Out west, one collie earned four High In Trial awards with four Highest Combined Scores in OB and UA/UB.

Collies accrued 25 Herding Group placements with 4 Group 1 awards going to the smooth dog, CH Sheranda's Messenger (Florida), the rough dog, GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter and the smooth bitch, GCHB Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan (Texas) and the rough bitch, CH Taradells Secret's Legacy PT (Arkansas). The judges who selected the collie as the top herding dog of the day were: Beverly Capstick, Jon Cole, Danelle Brown and John Wade.

A total of 13 collies recorded placements in July – 9 roughs and 4 smooths. The placements included seven Group 2s, eight Group 3s, and six Group 4s. Of all the placements, the Rough Variety came away with a ribbon 19 times compared to 6 for the Smooth Variety.

Mello-D's Smooth Criminal was awarded a Group 2 at Huntington Kennel Club in West Virginia under Patricia Hess.

GCH Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan and Fenric Towell were awarded an NOHS Reserve Best Owner-handled in Show under Alisa Brotherhood in Houston, Texas and also a Group One under John Wade in Longview, Texas.
GCHB Highcroft St. Germaine Wildfire was awarded a Group 2 and 3 under judges Jon Cole and David Kirkland in Illinois.

Smooths placing in the Herding Group – 4 (3 dogs - 1 bitch): CH Sheranda's Messenger (D), GCHS Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue (D), GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst (D), GCH Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan (B)

GCHS Travler Sugarnspice Witches Do Come Blue was awarded a Group 3 under Barbara Pessina at Putnam Kennel Club in Carmel, New York
GCHB Qualteri Lazurite Island Tryst was awarded a Group 2 in Flagstaff, Arizona under Shelley Hennessy and a Group 4 in Casper, Wyoming under Arley Hussin.

Texas was the state with the largest entries of herding dogs in the country. There were four shows with 200-plus herding competitors in which collies earned a placement. The largest number of herding dogs shown at a show in which a collie placed was 249. It was at Beaumont Kennel Club in Houston. The award was a Group 3 and it went to the rough dog, GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter. The Herding Group judge was Gloria Kerr.

John Wade was the only Herding Group judge that placed both varieties in the same group on the same day. It was at Longview Kennel Club in Houston on July 28 with 97 Herding dogs shown on the day. The smooth bitch, GCHB Swan's Grand Jete' Of Tercan placed first and the rough dog, GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter, placed third. Judge Wade's initial breed was Dachshunds. He was approved to judge the breed in October 2014.

GCHG Scalloway's Lion Hunter took five Group placements during the month with three of the shows having more than 200 herding dog shown on the day. These larger all-breed shows were held in Houston, Texas.

National Owner-handled Series

Herding Group judges placed collies 25 times in the AKC's National Owner-handled Series. The placements included five Group 1s, one for the Rough Variety and four for the Smooth Variety. Smooths took 19 placements and the roughs took 6.

CH Mello-D's Shadows And Light was one of the month's NOHS award winners under Sheila Polk in South Carolina.

Obedience awards

Rough collie, Silver Cloud Swan's Gift UDX OM1 BN GO RE AX AXJ NF earned four Highest Scoring Dog in Regular Classes at shows in California and Washington with a range of 14-18 obedience competitors at each of these shows.

Silver Cloud Swan's Gift UDX OM1 BN GO RE AX AXJ NF earned four High in Trial awards during the month.
