Journal: problems, point and what we are going to do
For our essential question, we chose the question of how historians evaluate sources. There are a few problems that I see that this question could have. First of all, we might end up giving a very generic presentation, where we list the ways that historians evaluate sources and how they work. We should try to avoid this and make an effective presentation. The point that we want to make is that that historians have a variety of ways to validate sources, but there is no machine that can do it and it is a human process. Such as reading for biases and corroborating evidence, and looking at primary sources. We want to make a passing presentation that presents our point in a effective way, to do this we are going to give examples of evaluated sources and go over sources that may be seen as invalid and why. We hope to make this creative and not generic as is a risk with our question.
Journal: what did you learn today?
After we discussed the point that we wanted to make, we ran into many problems that we did not foresee. We had many ideas that we wanted to pursue, but we couldn't make any of them directly related to the point that we wanted to make, or more importantly answer the question that we chose. We spent most of the work time trying to find evidence and an approach. I learned that even the most simplest questions can be really hard to answer.
What is your main point:
The main point that we want to make is that the process of evaluating sources can seem fixed and machine like, whereas you look at each criteria and if it does not achieve the criteria it is garbage. The secondary point that we want to make is that evaluating sources is a human process, since everyone is biased in some way, and each historian will get a different result
What is my goal,
My goal is a successful passing presentation
Our question is how do historians analyze sources for reliability.
Historians assess the reliability of sources by checking for biases, motives and reasons why it may be inaccurate, because these places indicate where there may be purposeful, or accidental inaccuracies in the source.
What did you learn today
Today, after watching the other presentations, i learned that different perspective can shape history, and that there are different perspectives. I also learned a lot about how to give a presentation, after observing the success of the first group, i tried to model my section around discussing the limitations
