The Era of Good Feelings by Morgan C.M.

  • I finally made it, the "New World". The place that everybody's talking about. As I step off the boat into the morning dew, I see people, lots of them, too many of them. I guess this is America. I notice how the women were not as equal as men. The Americans also enjoy fighting and arguing, about how the country should be run. Americans also enjoyed music, literature and art. Americans are also very proud of their country, always talking about how great their president is, and how much money the new federal bank is making. I think being an American means taking an interest in American things, or taking pride in ones country.

Davy Crockett, an American Individualist. I find his work impeccable, a sense of humor and a splash of fiction and reality. It's amazing how Crocket's work was so popular that he got elected for congress, although his time in congress was unsuccessful, he was known to be a great leader. In his autobiography ( a book of tall tails based on Crockett himself), he represents what a social outlook looks like, and shows his ability to show his individual talent for writing literature. Davy Crockett also took pride in his work.

“You can all go to Hell, and I’m going to Texas.” -Davy Crockett 1830

Henry Clay is an American who created the American system. The main components of this system are, federal spending on transportation projects, taxes on imported goods and a new national bank. Clay wanted to unify the country with capitalism, and he wanted all the companies to produce and distribute all goods for profit.

¨I have heard something said about allegiance to the South. I know no South, no North, no East, no West, to which I owe any allegiance.¨ - Henry Clay

Art was a big part of the American culture. Americans cherished pieces by John James Audubon and George Catlin. John Audubon drew detailed portraits of birds and George Catlin created pictures of dangerous landscapes. Folk art was popular too, women enjoyed making unprofessional quilting and sewing pieces. Portraits captured personalities and emotions.

American music and literature was also an important part of American culture. Music pieces like the "Star Spangled Banner" was originally a poem written by John Stafford Smith. Then it was created into a song that soon represented the country. Slaves and African Americans also enjoyed music. While the slaves worked they often sang songs about individuality, and about being free from slavery. German folklore was also popular, fiction and rhyming poems by Davy Crockett and Henry Longfellow were read often as well. The types of music that early Americans listen to were, classic, spiritual, patriotic and instrumental. American people also attended cotillion dance parties.

"Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad." -Henry Longfellow

People that would not agree that this was the "Era of Good Feelings" would have to be women, slaves and immigrants. Women did not have the same equal rights as men. They were often left to care for children, cook and clean. Slaves also didn't have the same rights as American men, they were beaten and put to work. Immigrants were treated the same as slaves and were also put to work or sometimes were also bought as slaves.

"Now I've been free, I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back and be a slave." -Harriet Tubman Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/slave.html

I still believe that Americans are very proud of what they poses in this country. They also enjoy music, art and literature. Being American could be being proud of being American and enjoying American things.
