Department of Music
The music program at Holy Trinity Catholic High School offers wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, choir, drumline, and general music courses. Through flexible scheduling, students are provided with an education that prepares Holy Trinity students to succeed, wherever their interests may lead. Our performance classes not only offer students the ability to share his/her talent with the community but to perform at a variety of levels. It provides an outlet to develop the student's self-confidence, and the cultivation of habits, attitudes and appreciation.
The goal of the Holy Trinity Music Department is to graduate students who:
- Will demonstrate the development of musical performance skills: including but not limited to history, theory, rhythm, aural, notation, tonal and listening
- Make music alone and with others
- Respond to music aesthetically, intellectually, and emotionally
- Understand the role music plays and will continue to play in the lives of human beings
- Support music within the community, and encourage others
- Continue their musical journey after high school

Instrumental music is open to all students and involves instruction in the full range of concert band and jazz ensemble instruments: piccolo, flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba, orchestral bells, xylophone, vibraphone, chimes, snare and bass drum, timpani, and a wide range of percussion instruments. Students who register for instrumental music are invited on our yearly performance tour, as well take part in the Edmonton Catholic School Band Share Day, and our annual winter and spring Fine Arts Gala.
Instrumental Music 10 (5 Credits): Recommended Prerequisite: Grade 9 Band or audition
Instrumental Music 20 (5 Credits) Recommended Prerequisite: Instrumental Music 10 or audition
Instrumental Music 30 (5 Credits) Recommended Prerequisite: Instrumental Music 20 or audition
*Instrumental Music 30 can be used at some Post-Secondary Institutions for acceptance into certain faculties*
Choral Music provides an avenue in which individuals can express themselves while singing, playing, listening, reading and creating music. No previous experience required! A variety of styles are explored while singing in unison, 2 and 3 part harmonies. Students who find themselves striving in choral music and wish to further enrich their singing are invited to sing in the Holy Trinity Worship Band or audition for the Edmonton Catholic Schools All City Choir. Choral students at Holy Trinity are also invited on our yearly performance tour, as well as are involved in our annual winter and spring Fine Arts Gala.

This full year class offers students an opportunity to study music as a performance based course. It gives our Trinity musicians the opportunity to focus their learning by exploring and experiencing skills necessary to understand, communicate and perform publicly. Students who perform in the Holy Trinity Jazz Band are invited on our yearly performance tour, as well take part in both our annual winter and spring Fine Arts Gala.

General Music AP Guitar or Piano
The general music program is open to any student who would like to learn a musical instrument. The main choices are piano keyboard and guitar. The school has keyboards available for use however if students want to learn the guitar they must provide their own electric guitar for in class and home use. This course offers a broad range of musical experiences within a non-performance based environment.

General Music AP 30 (3 Credits): Recommended Prerequisite: General Music AP 20
Drumline is a year long course designed to promote percussive arts through marching and concert percussion instrumentation. This course will expand student’s musicianship and provide them an opportunity to build percussive skills not available through other Music courses. It is a collaborative team-based program, which requires self-motivation, commitment, effective work habits, and initiative. Students will explore leadership skills, and peer mentorship while learning theory, rudiments, musical notation, and advanced rhythm techniques. Participation in Drumline provides students with a sense of community, self-worth and feelings of achievement and satisfaction. Students perform at many school events including football and basketball games, pep rallys, and open house.
