Mukilteo School District Elementary School Culinary Competition

We’re thrilled to announce our 11th Annual Future Chef Competition open to all 3rd, 4th & 5th graders. The idea behind this event is to help educate the kids in healthy eating habits. Too often we hear about obesity in kids and kids not making the right choices in terms of their eating habits. That’s why we want kids to submit recipes for their favorite Fiesta Fit-Mexican Inspired Recipe!

Judging will be based on the following criteria:

• Health Conscious Recipe

• Fun Kid Food

• Judges Choice

• Best Table Presentation

Timeline of the event:

1. A flyer will be sent home with the students describing the event. Included with this flyer will be a blank recipe card.

2. Kids who would like to participate need to fill out the recipe card and return it to their teacher.

3. Teachers will collect the recipe cards and give them to building office or cafeteria.

4. Buildings return recipes to Nutrition Services no later than March 29, 2019.

5. A panel of administrators will evaluate recipe submissions and narrow the number of finalists down to 3 kids per school.

6. Those finalists will be formally invited to a Culinary Competition “Cook-Off” to be held at Sno Isle Skill Center on April 26, 2019 at 2:30.

The local press will be invited to take pictures of the kid’s creations and parents and teachers can view (and taste!) the final product during the reception portion of the event.

Transportation of the kids will not be provided on April 26th for the competition. Kids will need to be dropped off and picked up at Sno Isle Skill Center. Each child will have an adult mentor assigned to them to ensure safe food and preparation practices are followed. All Finalists will receive a framed plaque, recipe book of all finalists’ recipes, chef coat and hat. The grand prize winners will receive a new Bike & Helmet.

Here comes the sun!

Dress Code for Warm Weather Days

Now that warm weather is here and the sun is out, please remember the following guidelines when getting your student dressed in the morning.

No tank tops

No shirts or dresses with narrow “spaghetti straps”

No “belly shirts” (showing midriff) or open back

No flip-flop shoes or other shoes that come off too easily during recess or class.

Shorts should not be too short. To check if they meet the school dress code, have your student stand with his/her hands at their sides. To be long enough, their shorts must come down to the tips of their fingers, or longer.

Safety Matters

We ask that all parents and guests sign in at the office and wear a visitor nametag. Please do not be offended if an adult reminds you to do so, as this is critical for student safety. Remember to sign out when you leave. This helps us account for visitors in the event of an emergency.

The drop off loops in the front of the building are for buses only. No cars are allowed in the bus loops during school hours from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

Just a reminder, the playfields and big toys are closed to the community during school hours (8:35AM to 3:45PM). We invite you back to campus after 3:45PM, when classes are dismissed and all students have left. There is no student supervision before 8:35AM or after dismissal, at which time parents take responsibility for their child’s safety.

Attendance Reminders!

We would like to remind students and families about the importance of daily attendance. In order for students to do their best learning in school, students need to be present at school and be on time as many days as possible. If your student is absent, please call our office (425-366-3500) or email SLMAINOFFICESTAFF@mukilteo.wednet.edu Additionally, please be mindful about scheduling appointments outside of the school day whenever possible. Per new district policy, we will be sending home attendance letter with students who have missed three or more days, either excused or unexcused. The hope is to bring awareness to how many days students have missed, regardless of the reason. Per state law, we are required to schedule a parent conference for students that have accumulated 5 absences in a month or 10 in a year.

Transportation Changes?

We realize that plans change. If for some reason your child needs to go home in a manner other than their normal mode of transportation, you must send in a note or call the office 425.366.3500 at least one hour before they are released. If we have not been notified of a change in transportation, we are required to send them home as per their established plan.
