"To change the world we must be good to those who can't repay us." Pope Francis
Dear Families and Friends
It is hard to believe that we are now half way through Term 2!
I am currently in Broome for a Principal's meeting. Miss Laura Quinn and Mrs Jen Rudyard are leading the school in my absence.
Reconciliation Week
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is “Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage.” During the week, Australians are invited to “learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, to share that knowledge and help us grow as a nation.” More information can be found at https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-week/ or you could take the opportunity to chat with a local Aboriginal community member.
Join us for afternoon tea and fun activities from 1:15pm this Friday.
Earbus
Thank you to those families who returned consent forms for their children. The Earbus continues to provide an extremely valuable service to all students who have returned a consent form. If you have not received a form, please call into the office and see Miss Eileen Watkins.
SciTech Visit
All students were treated to an engaging visit from the SciTech team last Thursday. The disappearing glass beacons in the container of oil was a favourite!
Evacuation Procedure
Last Friday our school practiced for what action would need to occur in the event of an emergency. I am pleased to advise that all students remained calm and listened carefully to instructions provided by their teachers.
Long Weekend
A reminder that there will be no school for students this Monday 3rd June and Tuesday 4th June. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Wednesday 5th June.

A Netball Competition for girls in Years 4,5 & 6 will be held in Kununurra next Thursday.

Reports
Teachers are currently preparing reports for students who have been attending school on a regular basis. Reports will be sent home on Thursday 4th July.
School Photos
Our school photo day for 2019 is Wednesday 26th June. As is the expectation for every day at school, please ensure children are dressed in their full school uniform.
Food Allergy Week
Sunday 26th May - Saturday 1st June is Food Allergy Week. As we have students and staff at St Joseph’s with food allergies, this is a great opportunity to ensure we remain as a ‘nut aware’ school.
Canteen News
To help us with our goal of minimising our use of single-use plastics, Ms Kris in the canteen has started providing metal cutlery for student lunches. If you have any spare cutlery to donate to the canteen, it would be greatly appreciated.
A big thankyou to Kununurra Neighbourhood House, which has kick-started our cutlery drive with a large donation.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

OSH Centre News
We are now nearly halfway through the school term so start looking out for the Vacation Care program in the next couple of weeks. Our last holidays were jam-packed full of excursions, including a visit to Kangaroo Haven which was a huge highlight! We now sponsor one of their joeys called Tank and hopefully we’ll visit Tank again in the next holidays to see how he is progressing. We also went to Juniper Aged Care Facility and visited the elderly people of our community. The children were initially shy, but soon started conversations with the residents. We had an interesting visit to the hospital and saw many of the specialist departments. Other places we visited were the Library, Celebrity Tree Park, Swim Beach and Mirima National Park.
This term our program has focussed on bugs and insects as so many of our children are keen to discover more about the creepy crawlies in our environment. I think we’ve all learnt something, and watching documentaries on insects has been a highlight.
We have some new jigsaw puzzles at OSHC which have been well received by the children; they are a great way to unwind after a full day of school. The weather is now perfect for being outdoors so all the sports equipment is being brought out every afternoon, and the sandpit is getting lots of use – some days nearly every child is in it, which makes for a very full sandpit!
If you need care for your children in the next holidays please drop into the OSHC in the next couple of weeks to pick up a booking form and program.

Medications
If your child requires prescription medication during the school day, a Student Medication Administration Request must be filled out by parents/carers. These are available from the office. We are unable to administer medications without a signed form, even if verbal permission is given over the phone or to the school bus driver. Thank you for your cooperation.
SCHOOL HEALTH NURSE
"NIT ALERT"
As you may be aware, head lice are an ongoing problem at the school and it is a continuous battle to keep the problem under control.
Can you please check your child / children's hair for head lice and nits, which are tiny silvery specks, found along the base of the hair shaft near the scalp. It is recommended that all family members have their hair checked and treated as this condition spreads rapidly.
THE TREATMENT OF THE CONDITION IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENT / GUARDIANS, NOT THE SCHOOL.
If your child is found to have Head Lice or Nits they need to be excluded from the school until the day after treatment has commenced.
Treatments are available from the Supermarket, and the Chemist – use as per instructions on the bottle.
You can also use Hair Conditioner – cover the hair in conditioner, and comb with a fine tooth comb to remove the nits and lice. Wash out the next morning. Repeat this process for 10 days, to completely remove all nits and kill the breeding cycle.
It is advisable to continue checking your school age children at least twice a week and even more regularly during an outbreak.
St Joseph’s School is a Nut Awareness Zone
We have a student who has a touch-sensitive, life-threatening nut allergy. Please do not send nut products to school in recess or lunch boxes. This includes peanut butter, Nutella and many muesli bars.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Canteen Volunteers Wanted
Miss Kris is looking for parents or friends of the St Joseph’s community who may be able to lend a hand. As they say, many hands make light work! If you can assist in any way, please have a chat with Kris or the Principal.
St Joseph’s School Uniforms
At St Joseph’s School we take great pride in our appearance. The school uniform is also an important aspect of child health and safety. It is a requirement that all students wear a St Joseph’s uniform (including a hat with our logo) that is purchased from our uniform shop. Similar items bought elsewhere may not be worn to school.
Please note that our “no hat, no play” policy will be enforced.
See our website for a full range of uniform items.
Uniforms may be purchased at any time from our office.
Praying the Rosary
Sr Marcella will lead us in one decade of the rosary each Friday at 7:35am on the grass outside the administration building. Please feel welcome to join us for five minutes of prayer.
New Enrolment Policy
The West Australian School Education Act (1999) stipulates that information about immunisation status and date of birth must be supplied when applying to enrol at school. As of 2018, a child’s birth certificate and immunisation documents must be provided before they can commence their schooling at St Joseph’s.
Thank you for your cooperation.
